Hi! My daughter's interp is really a teacher of the deaf and had been out of

the system for a very long time. She was hired to work with my daughter

Audrey and the rest of the time as an aide for special needs. My daughter

went to shcool 2 days a week 2 1/2 hours and speech 3 days 1/2. But of course

they presented to the town they needed more money to pay for a special aide

full time for my daughter. But that was inaccurate and now they are taking

her away. Go figure they got their money. It's amazing what goes on. Lori

My God! This is horrible. School board pays full time interpreters 17.50

hr. School board pays an agency (if needed for a sub) about 35.00 hr. with

the interpreter themselves earning about 23.00 or 24.00 hr. When I freelance

interpret, I earn between 20.00-25.00 hr depending on which agency. Remind

me never to move to Texas. Smile

Lori,

Sounds to me like she needs a signing aide until she acquires some language

and also the additional services of an itinerant Hearing Impaired (I prefer

the term Deaf) teacher. Just a suggestion.

I can take all the suggestions i can get. i have contacted the Department of

Education but they tell me thay can't help since I rejected a portion but the

Department of Special Education will be taking over the case. Their

suggestion is to hire a laywer. Any ideas would be great. Do you know if they

have special lawyers who deal with cases that are hard of hearing? or do you

get a lawyer who deals with special needs? Lori

Lori,

What ever happened with this? I meant to answer back in June, but,

well, I've been " in the weeds " as Knott would say. I still am,

tho I decided to play hookey tonight.

I don't believe that there are any lawyers who specialize just in hard

of hearing students. There are lawyers who specialize in special ed

and/or disability civil rights (I work for one.) Very feew understand

deaf or hard of hearing issues. If you go to the COPAA (Council of

Parents Attorneys and Advocates) http://www.copaa.net, you should be

able to find a list of attorneys and/or advocates who practice special

ed law, listed by state.

Lori,

If they used your daughter's or your name in their presentation to the

town, they have committed a BIG time violation of the Family Rights and

Privacy Act [FERPA]. However, since you posted this message in June,

it is probably too late to file a complaint (the Act says the complaint

must be " timely, " whatever the heck that means.) However, I would

encourage you to go ahead and file it anyway, so that your school

district understands that violations of confidentiality are VERY

serious. You can see both the Act and the Implementing Regulations at

the EDLAW website; http://www.edlaw.net They both contain info on to

whom you should send the complaint. If I recall correctly, it is LeRoy

Rooker, somewhere at the US Dept. of Ed. The reason why there is such

flagrant violations of our and our children's right to privacy is

because we LET them get away with it!
