Repo to banding

I just have some questions about making the decision to quit repo and

try banding. is 4 1/2 mo old and we are scheduled to see her

ped again at 6 months old. My dh and I decided that we would

evaluate out repo progress at that time and determine if we want to

move on to banding her. But in order to get the process moving more

quickly, and since I have heard it can take a month or two to get an

appt with the specialist, I was thinking of just going ahead and

making the appt. I figure if we decide to continue repo, I can

always cancel. So my question is, who do I make the appt with?

Pediatric neurologist? Pediatric neurosurgeon? CranialTech? There

is a CranialTech clinic in Cleveland which is only a few hours away

from Pittsburgh, do I go straight there and make the appt? Who do I

see first? I figure if we have the appts made already, and we decide

at 6 months to band, then we can go right ahead with it. Thanks.

Hi Becky!

It might be a good idea to talk to your Dr. first and see if there

is someone you'd see who's affiliated with your insurance company.

If he doesn't know, call your insurance. You might need all sorts

of documentation from your Dr. We needed a letter of medical

necessity along with a prescription for treatment using the DOC

Band. You might want to do some homework and see what's needed to

get the ball rolling. Then I'd go ahead and make the appointment.

You're right, it can take some time for them to get you in.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Becky,

You can make an appt with Cranial Tech for a free evaluation. Not

everyone sees a specialist. If CT said would benefit from a

band would your ped write the script?

Have you received your Bumbo yet?

Hi Becky,

That's great that your are being so proactive. I think having the appointments set up is a great way to go. That way if you do decide to band, you don't have any additional waiting.

We saw a pediatric neurosurgeon, not a neurologist. I think the neurosurgeon is more appropriate in this case as there is not anything wrong withthe brain about which to see a neurologist, just the shape of the head. I think some other parents have gone to a cranio-facial specialist as well.

To get treatment from an orthotic clinic such as Cranial Technologies (or similar place), you need to have a prescription from either your ped or a specialist such as a neurosurgeon or cranio-facial specialist.

However, you can go to Cranial Technologies for a free consultation without a perscription in which they do measurements and tell you the degree of assymetry. They will also give you a printed report which can be very helpful in getting the pre-approval from the insurance company.

We went first to the neurosurgeon who did not recommed banding but said he would give me an RX if I wanted one. I didn't get it at that point, thought about it some more and I was still very uncomfortable with the shape of Matt's head, so I called CT for the free eval. Knowing the numeric values for his assymetry and the criteria for coverage from our insurance company helped us in making the decision to band. I then had to call the neuro back to get him to write the RX.

If I had to do it over again, I would have gone to CT first for the consult and get the measurements and report. Then I'd have something to think about and discuss with the neuro. Then go to the neuro for their consult and to get the RX. Unless you are sure you want to band, then you really don't need the consult from CT and you can go to the neuro and just request the RX at the time of that visit. (They did not give me any precise measurements from the neuro...they may have done them because they had Matt for a little bit while I was completing some paperwork....I just never got anything from them).

Good Luck!
