Ahh, another one of those back formations we were discussing yesterday. I

looked in Tessier's Surgical word book and I didn't find untorsed but I did

find detorsed :), so I'd type " the testicle was detorsed. " Hope this helps

:)

Any thoughts?

Well, this is tricky. He says in preop dx that there is right testicular

torsion. Then he says it was " untorsed. " I would take untorsed to mean that

there was no torsion, which is contradictory to the preop dx. I would flag

it.

Thank you all for your ideas on untorsed. I flagged it and left it for the QA

people to sort out.

The poor kid (18yom) ended up having to have an orchiectomy. So I'm not sure

the purpose of detorsing it in the first place if all he did was end up removing

it? But, oh well, who am I to question such things?

They untorsed it to see if they could save it, but apparently it wasn't

possible and that's why he ended up losing it. I have a Rottweiler and when

I got her I bought a book about Rottweilers. There was a warning in there

about feeding any large dog a large meal and then letting them do any

exercise for fear of them getting something called stomach torsion. That's

where the stomach flips over and cuts off the blood supply (any torsion will

do that). The dog can die if it isn't treated immediately, and that's

usually why... they can untorse the stomach, but depending upon how long the

stomach went without blood supply it might not be able to be saved, in which

case the dog will die... they can't live without a stomach for obvious

reasons, never mind the fact that while it's torsed it presses on other vital

structures and damages them as well. Large dog owners are strongly advised

to feed their dogs 2 smaller meals instead of one large one for this reason.

I frequently watch Animal Planet and there was a program on there about a dog

who suffered from stomach torsion. The vets tried very hard but were unable

to save the dog, even after surgery to untorse the stomach. In the case of

the torsed testicle, apparently it had been torsed for too long and even

though it was untorsed, there was too much damage to save it. Hope this

helps :)

Most MTs do, it's what makes us good MTs :)
