Hi & welcome to our group:

To my knowledge, there are no such studies done. The key to any

success with a band or helmet, is finding an orthotist/clinician who

is experienced and/or trained in treating plagio patients w/their

device.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

That is a good, yet complex, question, since there certainly are

design differences between different helmets and bands. In addition

to the design differences, there are also variables such as the

orthotist (and the treatment decisions they make), how a particular

helmet/brand maker defines and reports " efficacy, " as well as the

many different headshapes one is trying to correct.

We have a PLAGIOCEPHALY STUDIES AND RESEARCH folder in the LINKS

section of the group that may be of interest to you. You can keep

up to date on studies on plagio and treatment by visiting the NCBI

studies search site, which is in that PLAGIOCEPHALY STUDIES AND

RESEARCH folder. If memory serves me correctly, there are studies

comparing repostioning to cranial orthosis, studies that mention

outcomes with no type of treatment, and studies that show different

devices do work. I don't recall any studies comparing two different

brands of cranial orthoses.

The only info I can think of that may be helful is that various

studies show earlier treatment generally shows better results and

that repositioning takes 3 times as long to achieve results similar

to cranial orthoses. In addition, " passive " style helmets rely on

growth alone (the babies head grows into the rounded shape of the

helmet), while " active " style helmets apply gentle pressure to

actively recontour the head.

Some reasons that I have read in posts as to why people have chosen

one cranial orthoses over another are confidence in the

orthotist/company, comfort level with anecdotal experience of others

who have used a product, insurance coverage of a particular brand,

price, location, or that they were referred to a particular

brand/helmet and went with that recommendation (or didn't know there

were other choices.) The reasons are many!

Take care,

Hi there, I'm haven't heard of any general studies for various

Cranial Molding Devices. The only thing that I can suggest is to get

your choices together, interview each one and ask if they have done

their own study as far as success/failure rates, etc. That being

said, you, the parent of the baby being treated should do your own

comparison's on each of them and decide which one will work best for

your childs needs. Good Luck!

Most of the time, the choice depends on insurance coverage and

location of the clinic. I think people choose the DOC Band or the

Starband because they're more well known. But that doesn't mean that

locally made bands don't work just as well.

Are trying to decide on a band?

If so please let us know your choices, maybe someone can give you

more info.
