Guest guest
My Urologist told me not to worry about it. I have medication that will work. I do not believe that from the guys I have talked with. Like I have said before if not for family I would ride this thing out until the end. I am more concerened about my quality of life after surgery more than I am the surgery procedure. I am the first one in our family to have cancer. Most had strokes in the late eighties, and a couple got shot back when. I have not mentioned my condition to my friend, but just make excuses at times. I guess I am just selfish. Wearing a diaper pisses me off. Using a pump after surgery will do the same. " Hold on dear let me go get the pump " . I heard the shot is better. I have been on " Flomax " for about three years also and I think it has dried up my " seaman " as the book tells me. I just have this gut feeling that I will back out of surgery. I want another psa before surgery to see if it has went past 8.4 from 2.2 in 36 months. It was about that time that I fell on my backside and really damaged, and broke the tailbone in half. I knew the prostate was swollen as I had to walk like I had been riding a horse. Legs outstretched. That is when my problems began, just after the hard fall. I had to go to the hospital ER twice as the prostate was so swollen i could not go to the bathroom. I drank two liters of water, got in the shower. Nothing. The next time was about three days later and the same thing. My son was off (44) and I called him, not that I needed him but wanted him to ride down with me. He said dad you are not a baby anymore. That hurt, hurt bad. End of personal crap, but I need support and You Too or what ever it is has phoned me, plus the local hospital (not the one I will be using) but they have meetings each Wednesday at noon, with meals and different speakers and Doctors. I will go tomorrow. But this group of men have already had surgery so I may get some information about the quality of like they have. Like I said it would would be like me to cancel the surgery and let the cards fall where they may. No I am not old.....Bob
Guest guest
Bob, I missed most of your thread about how you came to the decision on treatment but I do note that you do not feel comfortable with it, so why do it? I always tell people I fly with that if something does not feel comfortable to them then perhaps they should not do it. I think the same applies here too. It sounds like you could use more time to mull this over. That is my suggestion. Good luck on whatever you decide. JeffBob wrote: My Urologist told me not to worry about it. Guest guest
In good experienced hands, as long as the cancer is contained within the capsule and the Gleason score is below 8, with the primary number of the pair no higher than 3 and the secondary below 5, surgery offers the best chances for minimal side effects with the possible exception of proton beam radiation. Some urinary stress incontinence will be expected for the first 3 to six months post surgery, and restoration of full erectile functionality some six to two years. There will, of course, be no semen production. I was going to go for brachytherapy until I was confronted with the prospect of Lupron shot some three months before seed placement. This prospect caused me to go with surgery instead. If your prostate is swollen, and the biopsy shows that the cancer is non-agressive, you may wish to go for a course of Avodart or Proscar to shrink the gland prior to surgery. This will reduce the amount of penile shortening that will occur and make it easier for the surgeon to avoid damage to the urinary sphincters. With radiation, the opportunity to confirm the nature of the biopsy post surgery will be lost, though side effects on erectile function may be less inititially, there exist the possibility of permanent side effects developing long term. Also, there is the inconvenience (other than with brachytherapy alone) multiple trips to the treatment center. Should there be a recurrence of the cancer, salvage treatment options are much more limited and difficult. The only real option is likely to be cryosurgery, which has the substantial risk of erectile nerve damage (though there are claims that this problem has been solved). Because radiation renders the remains of the gland in a sticky consistency not unlike that of warmed caramel candy cube, surgery is considered so difficult that few surgeons will do it post radiation surgery. With surgery, the option of radiation treatment plus ADT shots are always there. For a very young person, the loss of semen production is unwelcome. Maybe in the near future iminotherapy will become available that will obviate the brutal need for surgery or radiation treatment. Louis. . . Louis. . . Guest guest
My Gleason was 3+4 after the second biopsy with 20% involvement. The left side of the prostate is clear with 13 biops taken. the first biop had a 5% involvement with only one core testing positive. He says now I am curable.. with surgery. > > In good experienced hands, as long as the cancer is contained within the capsule and the Gleason score is below 8, with the primary number of the pair no higher than 3 and the secondary below 5, surgery offers the best chances for minimal side effects with the possible exception of proton beam radiation. Guest guest
The last time I went to my Urologist he wanted me to understand, and feel comfortable about my decision regarding the de'vinnci procedure. He did say that he thinks the cancer is contained in the gland. With the method I have selected he will not be able to tell if it has spread to the lymph system, or where ever. I have a Hernia just where he needs to be but says he can work around the hernia. I just have a bad feeling about this surgery... My Urologist told me not to worry about it. Guest guest
Like I said I go April 17th to hear my options once more and to get details on what I can expect. He has more or less said he wants me to be comfortable with my decision. I may just back out after listening to his speech... My Urologist told me not to worry about it. Guest guest
Bob, If you don't feel comfortable with surger why aren't you checking out other forms of treatment such as Proton Therapy? Have you had a second opinion? Please check all options before surgery. I wish you luck with whatever your decision is.
