What in the heck would they be giving him alcohol for?? Is this some funky

treatment I've never heard of?

, It has been years since I have heard of this, but I have heard of it

before. I can't remember exactly what the alcohol is given for, but I believe

it does something to slow down the metabolism of the de-icer. Sorry I can't be

more specific about this, but as I said it has been years, but I have heard of

alcohol being given for this kind of problem. margaret

Did a search on Google for poisoning and de-icer and I found this at:

http://www.sadap.org.za/edl/adult/15.5.asp

Poison: Anti freeze - windshield de-icer ethylene (ethylene glycol and

diethylene glycol)

Management: Supportive, gastric lavage if early, followed by charcoal and a

cathartic.

Ethyl alcohol if ethylene glycol level greater than 20 mg/dL or severe

metabolic acidosis. PLUS Thiamine, IV, 100 mg per dialysis per day.

Seems alcohol can be used as an antidote.

Could someone explain this please??

If I remember correctly alcohol helps the body break down the deicer because

of what the chemical compound of what is in deicer, although I can't remember

off the top of my head what that is. Alcohol has also been used to slow down

a woman's labor or stop it all together, although I don't hear that very

often. Hope this helps :)

Yes--Grain alcohol is the (only) treatment of choice for antifreeze

poisoning (and de-icer would have a low quantity of ethylene glycol in it,

so it would be 'dilute' antifreeze)--at the vet's, we give Gemclear (180

proof) IV (can't get a dog to drink that!) for about three days, if they

make it--don't know about the beer though--maybe to dilute what was in his

stomach for slowing absorption?
