I had a 911 call from one of our officers. He called from his home requesting

an ambulance saying he slipped on the ice, fell and hurt his leg. This was many

years ago. I still remember how he cried and cried about how much it hurt. He

was home alone, taking out the garbage, slipped on the icy steps, crawled back

into the house. He fractured his lower leg with the bones completely breaking

thru his skin. Yes, I will always remember his voice on that call.

Another one of our dispatchers received a 911 call from our Inspector of CID

(now we call them deputy chiefs). He said he wanted her to send an ambulance

because he was having some pains in his chest but he insisted he didn't want red

lights and sirens. This was many years ago. At that time our officers

operated two ambulances on each shift that also functioned as patrol vehicles.

So she dispatched one of these units code 2 as he instructed. Upon their

arrival subject was found deceased. Autopsy showed a massive heart attack which

they say even if a doctor would have been there, he could not have been saved.

However, the dispatcher took it very hard blaming herself saying she should

have followed her instinct and not listened to him. After a little bit, she

quit our dept. She became a dispatcher at another dept in the state for a few

years, quit there. Found another job not police related for a few years and is

now again back at our dept as a property officer. Even though the incident

occurred many many years ago, to this day, once in a while she will bring it up

so I know it still haunts her. in Wisconsin
