Guest guest
Great! Thanks! From: sandyjramirez@ verizon.net <sandyjramirez@ verizon.net> Subject: [csb-autism- rx] Flu question To: csb-autism-rx@ yahoogroups. com Date: Sunday, October 18, 2009, 5:54 AM Does anybody know what I can give my little guy, 39 months old to prevent the flu symptoms? He woke up this morning with a cough that sounds like its coming from his chest, feels a bit warm and eyes have that sick look. Is there anything I can give him to fight this such as Olive leaf Extract or oil Of Oregano or any other supplements that might keep the symptoms at a minimum? I'm really worried since he can't tell me how he's feeling or what's bothering him. Thank you in advance. Sandy
Guest guest
Just FYI. Sambucol Elderberry Extract was the original and it was marketed by Nature Valley I think for a long time. That stopped and they developed their own version.. Sambucus. A note of warning that we used an " off brand " of elderberry 2 years ago and found that it was not made with only the berry of the plant. I cannot find again quickly the references on this but at the time I found info that showed that other parts of the plant can affect hormone levels and I finally uncovered some issues with my young daughter were most likely triggered by it.. and it went away when we stopped. Very scary situation at the time. I only use the Sambucol for my children as it is only from berry and it is avaialble at most health food stores and some pharmacies. I order online MUCH cheaper.. just got it last week from Iherb.com but I usually google to find best deal and buy the larger size for significant savings. Sambucol is NOT the same brand as the Sambucus (and I do not know if they use only berries or not). I just found that NOW makes a capsules that is only from the berry.. I got email confirmation from them this week. IF we were dealing with flu, I would take no chances and would use the well tested Sambucol brand only. We are taking a little of it and some caps starting last week as a preventative also....worked great last year in avoiding the bugs going around. Just my .02 on this and sorry I do not have references-it took a LOT of digging when I found it and it was not a simple google search at the time.. and I lost the info with change of computers. I assume this is still accurate info and wanted to mention it since so many of us have young little girls and there is already enough affecting their hormones in the environment and food, IMHO. Guest guest
Thanks so much for this info. My older son had a confirmed case of H1N1 last month, but we don't think our 9 year old (on the spectrum) caught it from him (which is hard to believe). I have a package of the Nature's Way Sambucol lozenges that I just pulled off my supplement shelf. I must have bought it a couple years ago (expiration is 10/09), but never used it. Any thoughts on lozenges versus syrup? Guest guest
I'm confused. I just bought Elderberry Liquid Extract by Quantum Health. It says Sambucus Nigra hight in Proanthocyanidins Ingredients: Elderberry Extract Other Ingredients: Distilled Water and Alcohol Is this not the correct one to give my 3 yr old son? What is the difference between Sambucol and Sambucus. i don't want to give something that is unsafe. Thanks for your help! Guest guest
Hi.. Sambucol is the brand that I know is only made from the berries. Perhaps Sambucus is too.. i have never checked. Any of it should be " safe " but my prior research showed that some parts of the plant contain hormones and those products made with ONLY berry part of plant do not contain any hormones. I verified that SAMBUCOL liquid and NOW caps are both made from only the berry part of the plant which is " safe " in my opinion for my young daughter so we use those. Sambucol and Sambucus are just two brand names as I said before. Guest guest
yes that is probably before Nature's way stopped marketing the Sambucol brand and developed their own (Sambucus). I had the lozenges but personally thought they tasted really bad and at the time my children were really young and I was afraid they might choke on them so we just stuck with the Sambucol liquid. Now we can also use the NOW caps that are " safe " but if we had flu, I would stick with the Sambucol liquid most likely since I know it is highly effective (and I think the brand used in the testing done) and I would not want to take a chance. I am sure many good products are out there.. this is just my opinion and what we do in my home. Guest guest
Dear Dr.JMcCandless, Just would like to ask one more time about dosage Vit D3 as you sugested 10.000iu a day for a week - just make sure it is correct not a 1.000iu a day? Going to give my 4 y.o. - looks like he got a flu. Thank you Elena > I would load him up with Vitamin C to bowel tolerance, get some Epicor from www.vrp.com as soon as possible and give two junior caps daily (150mg), give him 10,000iu a day of Vit D3 for a week, then 5000iu daily (also from vrp), probiotics if you have some, and yes, Olive Leaf Extract will probably help, and Elderberry (Sambucol?) is supposed to be good against swine flu in case that might be what he has. Guest guest
The huge doses are harmless and miraculous; I do mean 10,000iu for a week for kids, then 5,000 iu.
