My boys have plagio so they arent symmetrical... so I took them for that and because I was freaked over the head shape I was seeing here called Brachy. Turns out the youngest might be banded for the plagio (oldest is too old) and has microsomia.. but the overall head shape is completely normal... the doctor showed me pictures...

Brachy is when the whole back is flat, the flat spot that makes it look like its going up is normal, and everyone has it to some degree... and trust me if any neuro knows what they are talking about its him.. he has SEVERE plagiocephaly! LOL

Does this post make sense? I think it does, but well I'm typing holding a baby!

Hi! That's good to know that it's normal!! Because when you look at the severity chart for Brachycephaly (under Links I think), it appears that our babies heads should be basically a certain way i.e. not go up at all (side profile). That's really what I am wondering - what the range of normal head shapes is. Also, the head changes so much in the second year and that Brachycephaly chart is really just for baby head shapes. So, did you go to the neurosurgeon because you thought they needed a helmet but then he said it was normal for your boys??My boy has some flatness at the back so I know that is not the way it was meant to be (but I stupidly listened to my peditrician who said it would round out). His head does not go up from the front like "Captain Picard" but a bit in the back - made worse by a weird cowlick that sticks up right there so it's so hard to tell sometimes - it actually looks okay in the bath because the hair is not sticking up and giving it height. > > > Now I am a member of the "plagio police" like Christie said!!> > > > > > I just watched an old Star Trek rerun and I can't help noticing > > that > > > Captain Picard's head goes up quite a lot in the back! What I am saying is that its NORMAL for not everyones head to look the same, just like ears, noses, and chins...

My son is now 3 and there is very little change in headshape from when he was a small infant.. its more obvious now cause hes slimmer to be honest.

I have plagio and its less as an adult as it was when I was say... 11 or 12, but I am not quite as thin now ;) when I look at pictures from when I was an infant to when I was a teen, its about the same amount. I do have health problems as a result.. teeth crowding on my "small side" as well as not being able to breath from that nostril.. on the "large side" I have jaw muscle undevelopment, chronic ear infections, and a misalligned jaw-- which can be painful. This is NOT severe either.. more mild to moderate plagio... I will scan some pics later if anyone wants to see...

The "Brachy" headshape is very common in my family-- and as well all know, spending time on your back wasnt until recently-- so I think its true that that shape can run in families... as normal. You are probably right, its probably their shape! Connor, my youngest, has spend next to no time on his stomach since birth, and this is his shape.

We are still in the process of evaluating all of my youngests problems, I will know more at my neuro appt on the 10th of March :)

Hi! Yes, I know what you mean (I've read your second post also about it's normal to have differing head shapes etc.).That's very interesting that what looks like brachy may in fact be normal head shape and that your neurosugeon showed you pictures. Wish I could see some pictures like that. So brachy is when the whole back is flat which pushes the head up high...makes sense. My son has some asymmetrical flattening in the back but the whole back isn't flat. So it could be causing some mild brachy or it could be basically his normal head shape overall. I just took some photos of my 6 month old and he has the same head shape! We have been so careful with no back time but maybe he is on his back at the sitters more than he should be - or maybe it is normal head shape for both of them considering what you've just told me. How old is your oldest boy? Have you seen any improvement in his assymetry/plagio since he was two? The reason I'm asking people is because my son is now two and my peditrician still assures me it will get better by the time he's five!? I tend NOT to believe him judging from others experience (except for Hilly on this board who is the only one so far who saw improvement over age two). Does your youngest boy have to have surgery for the microsomia? I hope they will be able to correct that for him and that he will be okay? > > > Hey! I am a HUGE Star Trek TNG fan...HUGE!!!
