Ok Folks.. thanks to Krandall I think we're in business :) Her instructions

that she sent to the list should pretty much work for everyone on PCs, but

you'll have to send the attached files via regular email, not through the

list :)

Good luck, Jan, with this project. We used to do it when the MT Chat

channel on IRC was active, and it was quite helpful. We used Windows Sound

Recorder and created a .wav file.

On my Win 95 system, it goes like this:

Click Programs - Accessories - Multimedia - Sound Recorder

The microphone for the PC needs to be very near (directly over or next to,

if possible) the external speaker of your transcriber, C-phone, etc.

When ready to start, click the " red circle " (record) button.

When ready to stop, click the " black rectangle " (stop) button.

Include some " before and after " context but not too much so as to keep the

recording to a minimum since the size of a wav file increases rapidly. For

example, a wave file that is only 2.43 seconds long is already 107.5

kilobytes (KB) in size when using my apparent default setting of PCM 22,050

Hz, 16 Bit, Mono (which is 43 KB per second). The larger the file size, the

longer it takes to be received, whether via email or file transfer in a chat

room setting, ICQ, IM, etc.

By clicking on File - Properties you can adjust the format to save space.

Change " Select from " to " Playback formats " and then click on " Convert Now " -

select a " lower " format such as 8,000 Hz, 8 Bit, Mono (which is only 8 KB

per second). My original " test " file is now only 19.5 KB instead of the

original 107.5 KB. It is now a significantly " smaller " file that can be

sent more efficiently. The sound is of lesser quality but usually not

enough to make a difference, based on my experience.

When we were in the " chat " environment, the person with the wav file who

needed help " sent " it to each of the others. Each of us then " played " the

wav file and were often able to help out.

I don't think this list allows " attachments " to come through because some

(not all) of the messages that come through NMTC have the following

statement on them:

I have just started to install an online program to let others upload their wave

files to my web space. Then the file can be download by visiting a generated

link. (The link would contain, for example, 32 random characters to ensure only

forum members could download it.) I will let you know if it is ready by tomorrow

morning.

, This would be great. I am one of those people who knows absolutely

nothing about this kind of thing, as I do work for a hospital using Lanier which

does not go through my computer. So, would I need to get a wav pedal or do

anything to be able to listen to these files. I know I would if I wanted to

upload something, but I will probably mostly be wanting to help people with

questions by listening, so I am just trying to figure out how this works.

Thanks for any help, Margaret

Kim, The hospital PC did not come with speakers, but by now I am pretty sure

that everyone has bought speakers. Couldn't type without listening to my music

you know. Thanks for the info. Margaret

Margaret,

As far as just " listening " to a wav file goes, you don't need a wav pedal.

All you do is click on the filename, and all Windows PCs use standard

Windows software to " open " and " play " it back. There are even buttons for

rewinding, pause, stop, fast forward, etc. Having wav pedal capability and

software would allow you to further " manipulate " the playback but the

standard Windows software will play it over your speakers " as is " -- unless,

of course, your hospital PC doesn't have speakers maybe?

I am coming in on the end of this thread - I had a dog with a systemic

anaphylactic reaction this morning and I am just now getting back on track.

(dog is fine!)

Cant the sound files be uploaded to the files section of this NMTC list at

Yahoogroups? There should be 20 meg of allocated files space for each

yahoogroups list.

List members could download them from there.

Aloha,

Pam

Pam, That sounds like it might work, but then anyone who did this would have to

notify everyone where to go and what to listen to in order to get an answer. I

don't know about the rest of you, but my browser (although faster than 56K) is

still not as fast as though of you with cable or DSL lines, so it would take

more time for me to go to an internet site, find it and listen to it. Just my

opinion. Margaret

PS I sure am glad your dog is doing okay. I know that can be scary. MG

Jan, People would have to make a choice as to whom the files would actually be

sent. Reply to all sends the reply to the group and to the person who sent the

message you are replying to. For instance, I have just hit " reply to all " on

this message. It will now go to NMTC and to you (Jan). From what Kim Randall

said, I believe if I attached a file to this message, the attachment would go to

you, but it would not go to anyone else at NMTC. However, people could be picky

and only send the files they wanted to have listened to to certain people. This

would only create problems in the middle of the night, when it is hard to tell

who is up and would be receiving. But even in this instance, they could send

out one message and ask who is around and then send out the message with the

attachment to those who responded to the original message. This is very doable,

it is just a little more complicated and will need to be thought out. Also, we

will all want to be very careful about the attachments that we open, making sure

to only open ones that are actual wave files, so as to never accidentally open a

virus. Just a little note of caution there since I have been sent the SnowWhite

virus about five or six times this week. Margaret

Margaret: That's why I was thinking just sending the wav file to those of us

who wanted to hear it would work, but it would have to be sent directly

instead of through nmtc. I believe if one hits Reply to all it will do that.

So far everyone who has responded is on a PC, so the instructions should work

for everyone, although I'm not positive about Win ME since i've never used

it. I wasn't sure whether anyone was on a MAC or not, in which case I'd be

totally stumped :) But, as I said, that wouldn't be the end of the world

because I chat with people on AOL who are on MACs and they could send me the

instructions needed.

A rough draft of a program to upload files is now available at:

http://www.mtmentors.com/nmtc

After a file is uploaded, a randomized link is generated to the download file.

One can then easily copy-and-paste the link into one's message.

I welcome any suggestions. As an added security, I plan to download files after

72

hours or so after upload.

Pam is correct that we could just upload the files to the forum's files section.

Of course, the moderator would have to lift the " no uploads " restriction.

I don't think file size is a major issue if the file is editted (such as by

Window's Sound Recorder) to just have the statement(s) in question.
