Guest guest
, carb counts are completely different from exchanges. You can get carb counts from the USDA website, URL is http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl Or if you eat a lot of prepared packaged foods, the Complete Book of Food Exchanges by Corrinne Netzer has it all. It's in paperback. My problem with this book is that fruits and veggies are often given in dimension measurements (for instance1 banana that is six inches long, 1-1/2 inches wide) which makes it difficult to get an exact count. On the other hand, the USDA site has everything in grams. Of course for this you need a gram scale...I got a very nice battery-operated one for around $30. (It also weighs in pounds and ounces). Some of you say you only do 50 or 100 grams of carbs per day. Well how many " exchanges " would that be considered on the diabetic exchange lists? And I am looking at the fruit exchange list and it says approximately 15 grams carb per serving. But everything cannot be exactly 15 grams can it? So where can I get a list that itemizes everything and its exact carb counts? Thanks in advance. >>

Way over the low carb limit, I suppose. Also, do you count the few carbs that are in meat and veggies in your low carb total for the day? >> Yep, all carbs count, no matter where they come from. However, meat, fish, chicken have no carbs so you can have all you want of that.. and yes, 150-180 daily carbs isn't really considered low carbing. Medium carbing maybe...Have you read the Bernstein book yet? .Vicki

Or department stores with good gourmet sections...just call around. Vicki
Guest guest
thanks for the info, but now I have another question! What else do you eat all day then? And approximately how many calories does your diet allow? I am supposed to be on an 1800 calorie a day diet with of course 10-12 exchanges of carbs per day. by my calculations, that would equal approximately 150-180 grams of carbs a day! Way over the low carb limit, I suppose. Also, do you count the few carbs that are in meat and veggies in your low carb total for the day? Sorry for all the questions, its just that I think I would like to try the low carb approach, but I want all the info first! meniowl@... wrote: > In a message dated 11/28/2000 6:57:41 AM Pacific Standard Time, > ang123@... writes: > > << Some of you say you only do 50 or 100 > grams of carbs per day. There are no carbs in meat (beef, chicken, pork) but yes I do count the carbs in the vegetables. I eat the lower carb ones like broccoli, green beans, mushrooms, asparagus VS the higher carbed veggies like corn, beets, and potatoes. For example, for dinner I have a steak or some fried chicken (no breaded coating), or fried pork chop(s), or cheeseburger (no bun) or my low carb pizza AND some vegetables and/or a salad with blue cheese dressing or ranch and some sugar free jell-0.
