If there's overtime to be filled they don't care what body does it as long as

there's a body there....supervisor or not. We don't feel like the

supervisors steal ot from

us.....there is a supervisor who seems to add ot slots w/her name in them

when shes running low on cash......I have mentioned this before and others

have noticed it but nothing is done. Then we have the ones who will

" willingly " work ot as long

as they get to pick what position they work.

I am not a supervisor, just one of the dispatchers. But, (and a big but )--

is if your dispatch is unionized or not. You do not state whether they are.

IF they are, you sound like you could be facing some paperwork in the form of

greivances. Of course, it all depends on the language of the union contract.

Anyways, even if not unionized, the word " fight " in your one sentence kind of

sets a bad tone. Just my opinion ......and you know what they say about

those....;-o)

Supervisors bid for available overtime along with anybody else - both

supervisors and dispatchers bid on overtime spots to cover supervisor and

dispatcher vacancies. But if the overtime spot is for a supervisor vacancy,

the supervisors get first pick ahead of the dispatchers (and also the

dispatchers bidding for that spot know that they will be assigned acting

supervisor for the shift if they get the bid); and vice versa for the

dispatch spots. Currently our supervisors are all working supervisors,

meaning we are assigned positions and handle reliefs, etc, from our

supervisors console. This may change, if we ever get enough staffing not to

have to do that!

We don't have supervisors " per se " in my workplace so this isn't an

issue....however I can't possibly see the problem with a supervisor

volunteering for overtime where someone is going to get into a 'held/forced'

situation - if someone is willing to take it, then so be it - but if someone

is going to be held hostage in the comm center against their will to cover

overtime they don't want to cover, why would they say that the supervisor is

'stealing' their overtime if they are willing to fill the shift???

Now take my wife, please! I would gladly give my ot away. At my place of

employment they do not let the full time supervisors work dispatch shifts.

Ask any of the full time sups or administration..they are considered " safety

hazards " and do not/will not work a dispatch shift or a comm officer (call

taker) shift. (period)

We're not allowed to. Dispatchers are union, and we're not.

And the dispatchers would definitely consider it stealing their OT.

I am a supervisor and we are not union. I choose not to " steal " the ot,

however I will work it of no one else wants to. I figure that at my pay rate

I'm sure the admin would rather I didn't work any ot anyway unless I

absolutely have to.

>Okay, how many supervisors out there are allowed to work overtime in

dispatch?

As a supervisor I am allowed to work overtime in dispatch... However

any overtime is being frowned up...

The agreement with the state says that I can't work that overtime until

it has been offered and turned down by all personnel in the

Telecommunications Operator II positions (dispatchers).

So... here's the catch... In the job description for my position it

states that one of my job duties is to fill in for operators when

on vacation... sick... etc...

I end up changing my schedule... working as a dispatcher.. and

not paying overtime....

It gets even more complicated... but I think I've answered your

basic question.

It is over a month from the new fiscal year. All the overtime for this fiscal

year is gone. We are working at 50% in dispatch. We have officers that

volunteered for a " relief cadre " and have gone to the schools etc. Try asking

one of those officers to not do the road one day, and do dispatch, when we

have no one. Want to see fireworks?

As to supervisors...suppose to do 40 hrs....we are salaried persons.

Amazingly, now that I am having to actually cover shifts in dispatch, I am

having to stay over to do all the admin stuff..and to do the interviews to

try and get people hired. I rarely do less than 10 hrs a day....usually is

closer to 12. No extra pay....I am salaried.

We have between 7 and 10 supervisors -- I forget how many cause we got 2

brand new ones and one I love that's been there about 6 months as well as the

others --- EVERYONE of them does come out on the floor and work radios and

phones. They sit down and just go for it. And they come in on their days

off and do it too.
