TDR,

Personal opinon: Jumping to DES (diethylstilbestrol) is like jumping

to HDK (High Dose Ketoconazole) and these are later drugs when the

antiandrogens " fail. " You antiandrogen is not failing, it is

presumably the cause of your diarrhea. There are medications for

diarrhea and since you can't get to your urologist/oncologist before

Friday, possibly you could get to your family physician to determine

what might work to stem the problem. Flutamide might be the culprit,

but then again it may not. Something as simple as imodium may solve

the problem. Here is info regarding treating diarrhea:

http://www.medicinenet.com/diarrhea/page8.htm. I would not be

jumping to DES at this point.

I was replying thinking that TD may want to use this in future. You are right that Lupron is the first one to try

My experience with Flutamide (+ Lupron)---I asked my doctor why

Flutamide and not Casodex. He gave me a long disertation about how

drugs like this are all alike on the tests and trials. When I pressed

him for a straight answer, he finally said Price. I was prescribed

the cheaper drug because a months supply of Flutimide may cost $200,

compared to $600 to $700 for Casodex.

Flutamide turned my urine orange after the first week of use.

Flutamide has a long list of warnings including severe liver

warnings. When I told him about the orange urine, he said that has

never happened in his 20 years of prescribing Flutamide, but he

finally complied to my request and switched me to Casodex. One pill

per day. One pill of Casodex was a lot easier to take than several

flutamide pills per day. When I put the information papers side by

side, Flutimide to Casodex, the warning list for Casodex was much

shorter compared to Flutimide. My urine stopped turning orange when I

switched. Common sense conclusion--Casodex is a better drug and was

less toxic in my situation.

I learned that any drug that can affect the liver should be monitored

with liver tests. A baseline liver test should be taken before

starting Flutimide. It should be monitored every 3 to 4 weeks.

Casodex, perhaps a little longer between tests. I was monitored every

6 weeks on Casodex and I was OK. My liver numbers were OK, however

they went up a little over time.

I learned that drugs like Flutamide or Casodex should not be used

long term. I learned that a year should have been enough, and then I

should have stopped it for a while. Doctors that promote intermittent

therapy have a plan for this, and the information to prescribe such a

plan is very costly information. There are a lot of people on this

yahoo group who promote intermittent therapy, but it needs to be done

according to a doctors plan.
