Actually, we have been a male dominated dispatch for some time. When I first

started here 13 years ago, only the supervisor was male out of 5

dispatchers. We were about half and half when I became a supervisor. In fact,

one female dispatcher complained that all we hired was guys and

" when were we going to hire any girls? " Well, if any good ones applied, I'd be

happy to hire them!

We are now 10 dispatchers, 4 girls/ 6 guys. The last four hires were males.

One of these hires actually stated that " men can't multitask as well

as girls can, so why was (his female trainee) expecting so much? " That got the

guys in the room to voice their opinions to the contrary!

Female dominated field? Not from where I'm sitting......

I'll also say something else... I can say this because I'm a female :-) I

don't have as many personnel problems with the guys - it's always the

girls that are bringing up personal issues. With guys, it's policy or

procedures. With the girls, it's he said/she said.

Annette,

I agree with you! There aren't near as many " issues " w/the male dispatchers

as

they're are w/the female ones. The females tend to make things more personal

where as the males keep it bsn oriented.

We have around 100 Dispatchers/calltakers...give or take and of the 100 there

are

about 11 guys. The rest are female. They just put another group of 6

trainee's and all Female. They are interviewing for another new class of 13,

and have not seen any males in that group yet. Plus out of the 11 guys, 4

are leaving sometime this year.
