Hi Becky & welcome to our group:

Waiting 6 mos after your begin PT for his tort is an awefully long

time. I don't blame you for going crazy! If you are uncomfortable

with his shape, please, demand a referral elsewhere. Check out our

group's " database " " Helmet/band manufacturers " , hopefully we have

one near you in LA that could see you.

Waiting until age 10.5 mos or so would put him on the " older " age to

begin helmet treatment IF it would be necessary. Certainly

isn't " too old " by any means, but the younger you begin, the better

and faster the correction usually is.

good & successful repositioning suggestions.

Hi Becky,

Welcome to the group! The younger a baby is banded the better and

faster the correction. If you do plan on banding, you really should

get the ball rolling. It ususally takes 6-8 weeks to get into see a

specialist. Once you have a script for a band it usually takes 2

weeks to recieve the band after casting.

Repositioning does work but it must be done 24/7!!! Is your son it PT

for torticollis? If so, it's going to be really, really hard to repo

your baby. We have a repo moderator, I'm sure she'll reply to you

soon. In the meantime check out our files section, repositioning

Hi Becky,

Welcome to the group. I hope I can help you with your repositioning

questions. It can be very difficult, if not impossible, to repo

successfully when the baby has tort. The limited range of movement

of the head really undermines repo efforts. Perhaps your ped. can

take this into consideration and get you an earlier refferal to

specialist for evaluation. Could you bring this to his/her

attention? Although your baby is still young at 4 1/2 months, it is

generally true that earlier treatment can yield more improvement.

You are also correct that a great predictor of repo success is

success with nighttime repo. When the babies really get moving, at

about 4 -5 months of age, nighttime repo can be especially

difficult! In our case, our daughter Remy started to sleep on her

sides at about 5 months of age, which was a huge help in getting

results from repo. On the nights when she wouldn't stay on her

side, I would take her to the futon in the guest room with me and

make sure she was on her side. Aggressive repo can be really

exhausting! Some other parents are sewing receiving blankets, bags

of beans/rice, or wedges to the back of the sleeper so that the

positioner follows the babies all over the crib! Mixed results so

far, but it's worth a try!

If you are open to helmeting/banding, you should start your pre-work

for that option before you give up on repo. It can take

weeks/months to slog through the appointments/referrals to get into

a helmet, and you will want to move onto a helmet/band right away

when or if you decide repo isn't working. We have lots of

information here at the group in the FILES, LINKS, DATABASE, and

PHOTOS section that can provide some info on helmet/band choices. I

would also start taking progress photos of your baby's head weekly

while you are repo'ing so that you will be able to show that repo is

working/not working.
