This news story struck me as outrageous.

People who know birds set me straight.

A man climbs 75 feet up a tree to catch his pet

cockatoo, Geronimo, who flew there. The man tucks

Geronimo into his shirt and holds him there with

one hand.

Now here's the problem: The man has only one free

hand to climb back down because the other hand is

securing Geronimo. The man needs assistance to

get down from the tree.

My idea would be to toss up to him a canvas bag

and an 80-foot rope. Slip Geronimo into the bag,

then lower him on the rope to the waiting hands

of the large crowd gathered at the base of the

tree. The man climbs back down.

The actual solution was to call a Coast Guard

rescue helicopter; lower a harness and a rescuer;

strap the two men together, hopefully without

crushing the bird inside the man's shirt; pull

the man, with his bird, and the rescuer from off

the tree; fly them, dangling from the rope, to a

landing spot.

Would Geronimo be all right being lowered in a

bag 75 feet?
