I CAN'T believe this day! It's all crappy situations, but AMAZING things are

being revealed!

The scenario:

After several squabbles with , I settle down to vaccuum the downstairs while

he's upstairs. Suddenly I notice a half-empty freezie melting on the side

table. Fine, no problem, I go to pick it up...and find one sitting on my

needlepoint. The needlepoint I've been working on for SIX MONTHS. It's very

intricate, and it's the first one I've ever done that has been flawless...

I call him downstairs, to make him pick up the freezie himself so I can deliver

a scolding for putting it on my knitting (what he calls my needlepoint) and make

him put it in the sink. Downstairs he comes, full of attitude. I direct him to

the table to pick it up, and as he does, I see that the freezie has MELTED ONTO

ON MY STITCHING! Onto the white and blue sky, about 3x3 inches.

I start to cry; I can't help myself. But I am not prepared for what happens

next....

HE STARTS TO CRY!!!!!

He runs upstairs and slams himself into his room. I call my mom so I can calm

down and deal with him gently. I talk to her for about 10 minutes, crying and

laughing - mourning my needlepoint, rejoicing over this show of empathy or guilt

or whatever it is. At the end of ten minutes, he is still crying. I go to his

room and sit with him, silently except for the occasional, " , stop crying.

You don't need to cry. " Finally, he stops. I ask, " Why are you crying? " He

says, " I won't play on the computer or watch tv or ANYTHING!!!!! " and starts

weeping again. Again, I get him to stop, and ask, " , why are crying? "

" BECAUSE i RUINED YOUR KNITTING!!!! " he wails, and begins weeping all over

again.

I am dumbstruck.

Finally I calm him down and tuck him in for a rest, leaving the room. He calls

me back about 3 minutes later. " I ready to say I'm sorry, " he says. THEN, he

makes a motion like he's taking something out of his mouth. " See, " he says,

holding this invisible thing out to me, " I have sad in my mouth. See? S-A-D.

Sad. " And then he pops it back in.

I smooth his hair, and kiss his face, and tell him how much I love him...and

then I leave the room before he sees me cry again.

I am awestruck by this day.
