I'm sorry, Grace, I just can't do it to her...

The box!!! Ack!!!!! Jacquie, it is a play on words. It is not literal.

" He looked in the mirror to see what he saw. He picked up the saw... " See,

the letters s-a-w make a word that can have at least 2 different meanings.

The meaning changes in the second sentence. It doesn't make sense and it

could never really actually happen. It's a joke.

>> Oh Grace, thank you for calling. I'm sure I'm not the only one

>> who feels so relieved and so proud of you.

>And Jacquie is not the only one who feels the way she feels.

See?

Nope. Let me show you why:

> The meaning changes in the second sentence.

Yup. I understand what you're saying, but look at this:

" He looked in the mirror to SEE what he SAW. " Now, this is SAW in the sense of

sight, right? Yes. But look at how it's worded: " WHAT he saw. " So if you

try to change the meaning in that sentence, it doesn't work...

" He looked in the mirror to see what he sharp toothed cutting tool. "

IT DOESN'T WORK!!!! If the words were interchangeable in context, THEN I'd get

it. But that's just DUMB!!!!

Are you banging your head on the keyboard yet?

Jacquie

PS do you think I have Asperger's Syndrome? Just maybe?

You're right, it's dumb. You understand the mechanics. That's all there is

to it. :)

> Are you banging your head on the keyboard yet?

No, I understand perfectly what you're saying and I agree with you.

Did you understand my comment about feeling the same way you do though? :)

> Jacquie

> PS do you think I have Asperger's Syndrome? Just maybe?

Just maybe!

And so does Matt. The " say it once, it's a rule " thing? Yeah. Oh, yeah.

He does NOT understand I just mean FOR RIGHT NOW. He pulls these things out

and I don't even remember saying them but they impressed upon him as LAW.

*sigh*

-Sara.

Thank you, that will be $3,000. ;)

No language delays but I did need speech therapy for pronunciation. Also I

read at 2 and spelled out every sign I saw, which drove my mother batty. Is

that hyperlexia? Mikey doesn't have it so I don't know about it.

Is

> that hyperlexia

It's hyperlexia.

And Mikey can still have it. It just needs to be at an early age. Putter

is hyperlexic but he wasn't yet at two, well, if he was, we did not know it

because he was completely non-verbal.

He did LOVE looking at letters and if you go to the hyperlexia website you

might find that Mikey is hyperlexic. I was surprised to find that he fit

the description before he talked at all and before we saw any sign that he

could read.

But I would need your early histoy, Jacquie. Sara told me hers. You can't

dx a developmental disorder without a developmental history as I explained

carefully to the idiots who tried to do just that with Enrique.

All I know is that I talked early, read at a grade 2 level in kindergarten, and

bit the grade three teacher hard enough to break the skin when they took me out

of grade one and tried to put me in grade three. I had horrible temper tantrums

and was hideously clumsy. All my childhood photos do show me looking directly

at the camera. So I don't know...

oh -- I also have always had a paralyzing fear of strangers, and any man with a

mustache (but not a beard, a beard is fine) causes me a feeling of absolute,

irrational revulsion. That dates back to as soon as I could talk and tell my

mother about it. (there is NO underlying reason for this. trust me.)

I am suspicious of all early readers. Little children should be looking at

people and not letters and numbers.

Smart girl! You knew that although you might be academically ready for

grade three, socially you were nowhere near ready. Hmm. A lot of self

awareness there.

I had horrible temper tantrums and was hideously clumsy.

Ah.

All my childhood photos do show me looking directly at the camera. So I

don't know...

Sorta autistic but not fully. I guess it is a still broaders version of

PDD-NOS.

Hey, now that is a thought. PDD-NOS.

But seriously you do sound more AS.

I thought Enrique was a BAP before he just totally collapsed and it became

clear that his issues were far more severe than that.

Thanks. Until now, the only bap I'd ever heard of was a sandwich bun!

I realized that with clarity this afternoon, after I logged off following the

posts about that riddle. I went downstairs and told it to Marc, who agreed with

me that it was, in fact, very dumb and highly illogical. (aspies should marry

aspies, yes?)

Anyway, I started in on the grammar of it, yelling about how if the words had

been grammatically interchangable it would have been an effective play on words,

etc... I mean I RANTED. For many minutes. Marc wasn't listening, he was

watching The Blues Brothers. I pointed out to him what I'd just done, and he

said, " well, grammar is something that you feel very strongly about. " Like it

was 'normal'. And I said, yelled actually, " There is only ONE WAY to speak

english!!!! There are RULES!!!! You have to follow them! "

oh. whoops. tee-hee.

Jacquie slinks off into a corner.

You guys, RELAX!!!

*I* don't use proper grammar all the time on the list -- just ask Salli; I'm

sure she's noticed! ;-)

I don't expect perfect grammar from you. I don't parse your sentences. I DO

expect proper usage of the language from newspapers, books, people speaking, and

plays on words.

Don't edit yourselves, for goodness sake!!!

I used to care about grammar....but now I'm lucky to read the email! If I write

it down, in any form, I'm lucky!

But I will have to start using most unique......:)

My hubby and I have had arguments about that one. It

makes me cringe when he says that. In fact sometimes

he'll say I'm 'very unique' just to get me going!!

Jacquie you must love it when I myself or any one else spells words wrong. This

way we keep you busy correcting them to yourself. LOL.
