Guest guest
LOL Welcome to stinky head! It's hard to believe that our cute little babies can smell so stinky. I cleaned my daughter's band with rubbing alcohol and a soft bristle toothbrush. I'd then lay it under a fan for an hour. It really helped. You can also use Loreal kids shampoo, lather up his head at the beginning of his bath and rinse it right before you take him out. --- In Plagiocephaly , " brad9596 " <brad9596@y...> wrote: > Carson has had his helmet since last Friday and we have cleaned it > every day. Guest guest
-We used alcohol to clean her STARband. Also we used Loreal fruity smelling shampoo. That helped the smell a lot!! Guest guest
Jenn, I'm sure everyone else has already told you this, but it is normal, not pleasant, but normal. I've always cleaned Moira's helmet with alcohol, the higher percentage of alcohol, the better. I'm using 90- something%, but couldn't find it until I asked the pharmacy if they had it in the back, they didn't, and later, I found it out on the shelf at the same place. I know you don't believe this, but you will get use to the smell. It never gets pleasant, but you get use to it. Just think about the day when Carson will be out of that helmet and won't have to worry about stinky feet head again! Guest guest
Ahh welcome to the world of smelly head!! I was told to use 91% alcohol once a day to clean it out and it seems to help[. Some babies will smell and nothing will help (thats how our last helmet was) and this one is not as smelly. Guest guest
We were told not to use soap inside the band because it may leave a residue and become a skin irritant. Anyway, one thing that has helped me (in hot Florida) is to sprinkle nice smelling corn starch baby powder inside the helmet, coat the whole inside, and then shake out the excess before putting it back on. Then, even though there is still a smell, it smells more like powder than anything else. It has really worked for us so far. Guest guest
My ortho told me baby power is one of the worst things to use in the starband. He said that it could cause a skin breakdown even more so than soap. He told us that really the only thing that is safe to use is alcohol and clean it more frequently if it gets smelly. ~~Buffalo, NYMama to:, Jordan (cranio, plagio & tort~Starband 10-24-03) & Re: What is that smell? Guest guest
Hi Jenn, I am sorry, but I couldn't help but just sit here and laugh while I read your post!! Welcome to the club!! At least now you know you are not alone!! We've all been through it. Luckily for me, my daughter used a local helmet that required the use of a prosthetic sock, so that helped a bit with the smell, but there was definitely an odor. LOL. Just keep it clean and if sunny outside, let it dry in the sun for a while after cleaning it. Other than that, just enjoy your baby's head AFTER his bath!! :-). Please keep us posted on your baby. /Makenna/LLUMC grad. --- In Plagiocephaly , " brad9596 " <brad9596@y...> wrote: > Carson has had his helmet since last Friday and we have cleaned it > every day. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone regarding the advice. Glad to know my son doesn't just have a body odor problem Okay, about the alcohol...how do you do it? With cotton balls or what? Then do you rinse it off with a damp cloth to prevent skin irritation? I have taken it off a few times today and still haven't smelled anything, so I dont know what caused it last night. We were told not to submerge the helmet in water because if the straps get wet, it would have to dry out overnight and too much water could cause problems with causing fungus to grow. We have just been using a damp cloth soaked in 's Kissably Soft Shampoo and then wiping it out. I am ready to try the alcohol thing though. Guest guest
We were told the same thing while Jenna was banded. Her ortho said absolutely no powder.
