You'd think that with the volume and variety of people that pass

through a grocery checkout stand that checkers would not use phrases

like, " So, what are you up to? " , or " How's things with you? " If you

really don't want to know don't ask.

I stopped and thought for a moment and decided that " just fine " would

do. My life isn't any of his business and this guy doesn't know me

from Adam, but he persists with, " I see you had to think about it. "

" Yes, well let's go with the short version. It's much more simple "

I can just see this guys face if I launched into, " well I'm leaving

to go to a funeral tomorrow, and my arthritis is flaring up, and

Christmas vacation is really hell and I can't wait for school to

start except that my twelve year old can't handle school and the

four year old hasn't been been assigned any services yet, and the

nine year old is in a manic phase right now. Would you like to know

anything else? "

A simple nice day today, or gee it's still raining would suffice.

Now that I think about it used to have a reply he used,

something like, " Yes, I think the weather is going to be really nice,

thank you for asking. " Think it's time I adopted that one. I like

it!

I totally agree!!! My mom used to embarass the hell out of me because she

would actually tell them.....I used to tell her " Mom!! They don't really

want to know!!! " I don't know is she was just desperate for conversation or

really didn't understand that they were just trying to be polite, but it

definetely used to embarass me as a kid. I just say fine and move on.

After all, I don't know these people and they don't care one way or the

other...

Oh, I talk way too much. Though I let others tell me their troubles too and

so I know that the lady that I see at Mc's has a bipolar daughter and

is pregnant again and it is a total shock and that the mailman's daughter

used to go to the same music camp that Enrique did and that my exterminator

lives next door to a group home and thus knows about autism, etc., etc. I

must admit I like it; I like talking to people and I think they like talking

to me.

But definitely there is a time and a place for it and a busy grocery line is

neither. I try to consider those behind me as well.

I have found that when you tell these people (who ask how the day is) who don't

really care in the first place exactly how the day is going, they NEVER ask

again! And it is fun watching them squirm knowing that they have opened a can

of worms! I always tell people that if you don't want to ask me how my day is

going, don't ask!

If we didn't " talk to much " how would we ever find " people like us? " I love

you gals (and guys) but I'd like to find a friend in real life as well!

Me too. :) Never pass up the opportunity for some conversation! But,

yeah, be considerate of the people behind you...If I have shopped, then I

have a very full cart, and we can have a nice chat while I unload it and

s/he scans it.

Yes, I am that lonely. :P
