Guest guest
Thanks . I feel about 1000 lbs lighter already. As for the IEP, this is probably the first IEP that I have looked forward to actually attending in a couple of years. I know that we will end up with a very good one as our attorney's are attending to make sure it is all done properly and has what is needed. They won't be able to tell me that I can't have a goal or service if she is entitled to it this time. Guest guest
Sheryl, I am so happy for you, this must be such a relief for you and your family. Good luck with the upcoming IEP. I sent this and it didn't seem to go through. I don't know what happened, and am sorry if it does post twice. So here it is again...Hey everyone...I am so excited I am not sure I can write this. As most of you know, we have been in battle with our school district for over 4 years. The last year and a half have been the ultimate worst. During this time, the school has insisted that is severe/profound MR (without coming right out and saying it) Over the years, I have lost all academic goals and all inclusion. It has been a nightmare to say the least. During the 1998-1999 school year, our school began insisting that I send to a specific school that specializes in the severe/profound MR. My fight got worse and 's education has severely suffered from all of this. I have had an attorney since April of 1999 trying to fight this placement decision. I did manage to keep her from being placed there during this time except for a 45 day trial out placement which was for 1/2 of her day only. Things got worse and I got her out of there and back in our home school full time. We spent the 1999-2000 school year getting evaluations to help the IEP team understand CHARGE and what that means for . We learned so much but the rest of the IEP team still didn't stray from their decision about her being MR and that she could only accomplish a vocational education with no academics. After multiple evaluations, an informal meeting with attorneys to try to reach a peaceful resolution, mediation, 4 or 5 IEP meetings that would last 4 to 16 hours each, we ended up filing for due process hearing. We had our hearing 2 weeks ago. I just received the information about the ruling. All I really know is that WE WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The school district did not prove that a special school placement would be the LRE or even appropriate for . There is still a lot of work to come with this. The ALJ stated that 's IEP team is to meet again (we are doing that this Thursday) to rewrite 's goals to reflect her true needs. This IEP is to be provided to him no later than October 18th for his review. Hopefully then, we will be able to determine a placement that will be able to meet all of her needs. There are a couple of things that we are going to work towards. This ruling is the first step to getting those. I won't go into the details until I have had more conversation with my attorney and my paper copy of the decision is in front of me. But, he has emphasized how important this first step is. He has mentioned that the next things will be HUGE for SPED kids. As for all of you that are advocating for your kids, keep it up. 's case is not unusual but they way our district handled things it became very extreme. I want all of you to know that I could not have done this without your help and support. This list has taught me more in the last year than I was able to learn in the 13 years prior to finding the list. Thank you doesn't even come close to expressing how much your support has meant to me through all of this. Now, if I can help any of you, I would more than happy to do my best.Sorry to ramble but I am overwhelmed with excitement right now. I will post more about the details when I get them.Sheryl, Mom to Mitch 14 and 14 CHARGE (who will be back in school soon) "5th CHARGE Syndrome International Conference, Indianapolis, Indiana, July20-22, 2001. Guest guest
Sheryl, I find this all so sad that you have to have attorneys present and you had to have them just to get to this point. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy the way things are going, just sad at the way you had to arrive here. Guest guest
Way to go! We are glad to hear everything went well. It is just a shame what the school system makes you go through when we as parents usually know what is best for our child. Great that you did not give up!!! Guest guest
This is soooo exciting. Especially since I have met and heard many stories of her spirit. Sheryl, I commend you once again for doing all of this for your child and, in the long run, for all CHARGErs. God bless you and may you finally get some sleep!!!!
