weekend from you-know-where

Well, folks . . . this weekend warranted a trip to the ER with my youngest

daughter, Jacynthe, who just turned 18 months old.

Am I out of line here? Is it totally wrong to be sitting for 7 hours in an

emergency room with an 18-month-old baby who is screaming her head off and

vomiting every 15 minutes or so without getting majorly hot under the collar

and impatient? We were not " triaged " until we'd been there about 3 hours.

Then there was another 3 hour wait to get into an actual ER bed. And more

waiting for xrays, doctors, etc. I was literally seething with anger by the

time we got Jacy into an ER bed.

I realize that everyone else in the ER had their own sick " issues, " too . . .

but I could not believe they would not make an exception to squeeze us in

somehow. Jacy was inconsolable, screaming, crying and pitifully interspersing

her newly-learned 2-word phrase, " help me " over and over. Poor little thing

-- turns out it was run-of-the-mill stomach virus/flu-type deal. She was so

weak from screaming and vomiting by the time we finally did get seen (around

midnite last nite) that I was ready to explode.

They did have to take xrays of her chest to rule out possible pnuemonia, that

was also a real treat, sticking her into this plastic tube with her arms

above her head, immobile and screaming!

The only good part of the evening was our last nurse. I told her I had

another little one at home who was 4, and I was worried that he would catch

this flu and have to return to the ER with him. She nodded and slipped a

couple of extra suppositories to help with the nausea (Phenergan, BTW, they

worked great for Jacy). Wasn't that nurse an angel?

So far, and I haven't gotten sick. But Jacy's dad caught it last night

and has been miserably ill. <snicker>

P.S. (4/PDD-NOS) has been wearing big-boy underwear for two days now

with NO accidents. So the weekend hasn't been a TOTAL loss, I guess!!!

How awful and inconsiderate and totally disgusting..to

make you sit there with a baby, a baby crying for

help..and just to be ignored! I hope Jacy is feeling

better now.

Congratulations to ...how did you do it..we are

still struggling with the potty training with

..and he will be 5 1/2 at the end of the month!

I would wait for 10000 hours in the ER if this was to be the high point of

my weekend! ;o)

Sorry you had such an aggravating time at the ER. They SHOULD see really

ill kids first. I'm surprised the noise of a crying baby didn't make them

push you up to the beginning of the waiting list!

Well . . . I can't really offer any potty-training advice, unfortunately.

was just going to do it when he felt like it -- pushing him and

prompting him did no good, so I just left it alone, figuring I need to choose

my battles wisely around here.

My theory about him all of a sudden " getting it " this weekend has something

to do with the fact that I finally got approval for Medicaid to pay for his

diapers last week after hours and hours of phone calls and voicemails. (For

any newbies: check with your health insurance's special needs coordinator to

inquire about diaper coverage -- most special needs kids can get free diapers

if they're over the age of 3 -- just turned 4 so we've wasted a whole

year's worth of diaper money that will not be reimbursed, unfortunately.)

Hey BJ,

Sorry you had such an awful experience at the ER. I

hope Jacy gets to feeling better soon. I hope you and

stay well. My mamaw would tell you to cut an

onion in half and put it out in the bedroom and living

room. I think it must help, she and Papaw are like 87

years old!

LOL..I'll bet that's what did it! It's great,

I should have my dh check with our insurance..we've

been buying those pull-ups for ..and he's almost

5 1/2...thank goodness WalMart makes a reasonably

priced version of the originals.

Our medicaid covers diapers and pullups. Conor just started wearing

underwear at night, so now I have 8 packages of pull ups in my basement. If

they weren't awkward to mail, I'd be happy to give them away.

BJ: I hope the baby is feeling better? We have all been going through the

flu this last week, too. Which is why I am so behind in posting. I had it

Wednesday and most of today and my dh had it today. I'm hoping the kids

don't get it as they both have really bad colds already. The baby is really

sick and if he doesn't get better tomorrow we will be going to the doctor,

too. Anyway, I think eight hours is pretty ridiculous. But I'm glad the

nurse gave you some extra meds.
