Dear Governor Whitman: My name is Beverly McKenzie, I am writing this letter for my 35 year old brother Brent Fendley. Brent is not able to write because he has ALS. This is an insidious disease for which there is no known cure. Dr Norman Ende of the New Jersey School of Medicine--University of Medicine, has achieved considerable success in the use of cells from human umbilical cord blood in the treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in Sod1 Mice. Dr Ende is evidently ready to start his research on humans but requires approval from the board of trustees, which to-date has not been forthcoming. My reason for writing to you is to solicit your help in gaining this approval for Dr Ende to further his research and for many of us in the ALS community, it could be an extension of life beyond the average term of 2-5 years with this disease. My brother has been given only 2-4 years to live, HIS TIME IS RUNNIG OUT FAST! ALS patients do not have MUCH TIME. Will this be allowed and if not, why?
