<< Hi, I need some word help. Brain CT. No context for the first one, I'm

afraid: Prominent s/l *massa intermedia*. Any idea of what this is?

The second one is on the same report, but a CT of the entire spine: There

is a long segmental s/l *spherinx* in the thoracic cord. This starts in

the upper thoracic region at about T3 and extends down to the midthoracic

region where there is a defect of diastematomyelia. Any help would be

greatly appreciated. These are both very clear sounding, I'm just not

able to document them for correct spelling. TIA! Please email me

separately as well as to the NMTC group as I get the emails much quicker

that way. >>

I found massa intermedia in my Stedman's Psych/Neuro book. The second one

could be salpinx, which according to Dorland's is a tube.. but I found

Salpix (yes with a capital S) is in Stedman's Psych/Neuro. I didn't find

Salpix in Dorland's, so I have no clue what a Salpix is. Hope this helps a

little. :)

After digging around some more, when I looked up diastematomyelia in

Dorland's it mentions a bony spicule.... could that be what you are hearing

instead of sphernix? Just a stab in the dark here :)

Thanks for saving the day Margaret.. syrinx never occurred to me. That's

what's so frustrating about not actually being able to hear these... I truly

believe if I could listen I'd probably be more help. Oh well.. glad you're

here :)

and Jan, I believe the second one actually is a syrinx, which I hear a lot

when doing surgeries on the spine. The salpinx is also a tube but, according to

Dorland's, specifically the auditory tube or the uterine tube. Hope this helps.
