Guest guest
Hello all! My name is Becki. And I'm a newbie to this list...and to Atkins. This is my 3rd day on Induction, and I feel like crap! This is normal, right? What kind of symptoms did you all experience? I've had a headache pretty much non-stop, I feel weak, my heart is pounding like crazy as I sit here and type, and I am having unbelievable cravings. I've been sticking to egg omelets in the morning and chicken & salads....steak (yum...which I felt guilty eating all the way through it), etc.... I have a hard time finding stuff to snack on. Can you all give me some ideas? Anyway, just thought I'd introduce myself and beg for support. Hope I came to the right place. Becki
Guest guest
Becki, Welcome to the List. We are glad you joined us. I have heard that L-Glutamine helps with cravings and you can get that at any GNC or health food store. As for things to snack on I don't snack much so the others can give you some ideas there. Don't worry those feelings will disappear pretty quickly. Make sure your taking good vitamin supplements. And drink plenty of water. Guest guest
Hi Becki, Welcome to the list and yes, you are normal. It is the carb withdrawal that you are experiencing. Soon you will feel much better. If you are not already doing so, it might help to take some potassium. That helps when I feel weak. Snack ideas for induction: string cheese, nuked pepperoni chips, cream cheese stuffed celery stalks (a fave of mine), nuts, jello with whipped cream (artificially sweetened of course), cold chicken, ham cubes, cheese cubes, sunflower seeds, etc. Just count the carbs because most of these are not free foods. I'm sure others will add their suggestions. Jean

Guest guest
Hi Becki, The energy will come and it will be wonderful. Usually the period when the shakey tingly feeling is the worst is right before it gets amazingly better. If you are hungry, eat more, just make sure it is low carb. I suggest always eating something when you should be eating so that you don't get suddenly starved at a time when good choices are not available to you. As to feeling hot, there are some of us who feel that is an excellent sign that you are " burning " that fat for fuel. I know that when I was in deep ketosis, not that I have ever checked--I could just tell, I was much warmer than usual. I also was always the cold one, so I know what a change it is for you. Now as to telling people what you are doing and working in a hospital, I would say ask Meenie, or Nan, or any of the other people who have been in the health field and are doing well with Atkins. You may be surprised at the number of health professionals who are starting to recommend LC. Make sure you ask the critics if they have read the book and can therefore provide informed criticism of what you are doing. Also, make sure you have some of the key points fully in your memory for when they do criticize it, though some may come out of the closet themselves. Always remember that Dr. A is a cardiologist first and would not successfully prescribe something that would be bad for his patients. It would go against that first do no harm clause. Good luck, Jean

This is normal, right? > stuff to snack on. Can you all give me some ideas? Welcome, Becki! =) Yeah... I remember those crappy feelin days! lol But, all things must get worse before they get better... I was tired, grumpy, had a headache... but, then it started to clear up, I started to be less hungry... and everything has been great since! Some snack ideas... I found a new snack that I didn't know I liked... Almonds! They are lower in carbs than regular peanuts, which had been one of my snacks. Also, about the only processed food I eat is American cheese, because I'm sorry, it's just the only cheese I really like - at least plain... the rest of the cheeses I liked always had to be on something - and those are things that are not allowed in my mouth anymore... yucky don' wannem! So, we have almonds... american cheese slices... and then there is my treat of whipping up some heavy cream and adding AS and cocoa. That's a nice sweet treat when I need a pick me up. It's my new comfort food! lol I really need to branch out in the treats department, but for now it suits me when I need the " feel " of a dessert! =) Oh, and I have the occasional Atkins Bar... Praline Crunch and the Crunchy Peanut Butter bars are my favorites so far... they don't have any chocolate in them, I can't stand his chocolate ones because it's dark chocolate and I never did like DC. I can't wait to try his Banana Colada, another one without Chocolate, but I haven't been able to find it at our GNC... OH, hey, did I tell you guys, no I don't think I did... I found Atkins bars at my local Kroger Grocery Store!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!! I was soooooo suprised to see them!!! Anyways, hope that helped you with some ideas... I'm not a big snacker, so not many ideas... but some! =) Love and Hugs, Kelli from Texas =) 234/212/125 Atkins 8/26/
Guest guest
Becki, You can have a double cheesburger, just forego the bun. You can also eat salads if they have them in the cafeteria. As for feeling HOT.... I usually get extreamly hot just before a whoosh! To me a whoosh is worth the heat! LOL Now.... As far as "those people," I just ask them if they can show me where I am hurting myself. (especially my doctor) I can show them where my blood glucose is now not ever over 120 ( I am a diabetic and check my glucose levels 3-6 times a day), my cholesterol is down around the 155-160 mark, my HDL is up, LDL is down, my blood pressure is now running around 120/72, I sleep every night from the time I go to bed, at around 11:30 to midnight and don't get up until the alarm goes off at 7:00am. I used to sleep for about 3 1/2 hours out of each night and even that wasn't all at one time. I was tired ALL the time and took severl cat naps. Alka Seltzer was my beverage of choice.... I drank it with my meals, the indegestion & heartburn was so bad. Now I haven't had even one since April! To those that say they can't do this WOE because it costs too much I just say that instead of calling Pizza Hut to bring out a pizza (about $14) I can buy about 2 pounds of hamburger AND a 3 pound bag of Chicken breasts. Or instead of buying a big bag of chips @ $2, I can buy either 4 boxes of jello, or I can get 2 boxes of cream cheese, instead of the cookies or candy, I buy pork rinds, cream, bags of salad etc. It's all in the choices. My daughter, who has no weight problem at all and is 11 years old, has basically gone to a low carb woe herself. She has watched me struggle and is smart enough not to want to go through this when she gets older. Sorry about the ramble....... Becki e wrote: ....And I feel HOT! ..... When I work days, I can have them fix me an omelet....but usually for lunch they have hamburgers, cheeseburgers, grilled cheese, etc. How do you handle people that are totally against the thought of low-carb/hi protein eating?
