Guest guest
The treatment is still considered experimental. There was a previous post that the clinic that Mike Landess was using does not take medicare assignment. Louis. . . 3D Mapping Biopsy - Focal Cyroablation Procedure Within the last week, there have been a couple of postings regarding Mike Landess (TV-7 anchor) experience with 3D Mapping Biopsy and the associated cyroblation procedure for treatment. Is anyone aware of where this treatment is performed other then Denver or New Orleans. Any other opinions on this treatment option.
Guest guest
, You haven't yet received much in replies to your question so I'll add a little. New Orleans seems to still be in somewhat of a shamble. The leading prostate doc left and is now in the Boston area (Dr. Sartor). I don't know who in NOLA may be doing saturation biopsy with 3D and cryo treatment. In Florida there is Dr. Onik who does saturation biopsy and cryo. He does not accept insurance and assignment. Seems like his fee may be $12,000. He may be located somewhere in the Orlando area. There are probably more docs who do saturation and 3D mapping, but I don't ahve that information. Dr. Scionti in Hilton Head, SC mentioned saturation to me one time, but I do not know if he has started using that. He does cryo treatment. There are very good docs who do color doppler ultrasound to locate PC in the prostate gland and some then take prostate tissue samples and do biopsy. These docs include Dr. Duke Bahn (Los Angeles area), Dr. Fred Lee (Detroit area), and others. Wish I could supply more information, but the above may be a start for you. I look forward to read further responses you receive. Guest guest
, There are an increasing number of centers doing cryoablation starting to explore the option of focal cryotherapy. The pioneers included Dr. Onik (Florida) and Dr. Duke Bahn (Ventura California). You can locate doctors using the Endocare cryoablation equipment in a give state on Endocare web site at: http://tinyurl.com/2hb2a3 Endocare might be able to provide a list of focal cryo practitioners. However, not all cryablation practitioners perform focal cryo, and not all of those that do use the saturation biopsy approach. For example, Dr. Bahn uses color Doppler ultrasound to guide targeted biopsies to assess whether or not focal cryo is appropriate. Also, there is the usual problem in seeking prostate treatment of assuring yourself that whomever you chose for a particular treatment has suffcient experience and skills to do it well. The two with the longest track records are Onik (doesn't take insurance) and Bahn (does). In addition to the group at the Univ. of Colorado, other published practitioners that I'm aware of include: Drs. J.C. Rewcastle and B.J. Donnelly, Univ. Calgary Alberta Dr. A.E. Katz,Columbia Univ. NY Dr. L.L. Pisters, MD , Houston TX Dr. J.S. , Cleveland Clinic, OH Perhaps others can chip in with references.... I've emailed directly to you a PDF of recent short article on focal cyro results collected from 10 practioners (not identified by name). Sorry folks, no abstract on the web... It's fuzzy do to the source, but should be readable. Drs. Bahn and Onik both have publications you could request from their offices. Guest guest
, As Jon said, Dr. Onik does mapping biopsy. Celebration, FL, just south of Orlando. His spcialty is cryotherapy. He accepts no insuraqnce, and his consult fee (2006) was $500.00, and the mapping biopsy was around $1500.00 if memory serves. The total cost for consult, biopssdy and cryo back then for me, if I had chosen to proceed was about $9,500.00. I do not know if that has changed. Guest guest
Insurance Co's won't pay for his urological services, because he is not a Urologist MD, rather he is a Radiation Oncologist MD. That is what his nurse told me. Sounds like a patient might be hardput to submit a insurance claim themselves. Medicare dropped him from their urologist's list she said. He's supposedly a cryotherapy specialist expert, just a mite expensive. Guest guest
Anyone that is considering cryoablation focal or not, should at least investigate and consider proton beam therapy as an alternative. Medicare and most insurance (except HMO's) will pay and the side effects are minimal, with results at least as good as cryo. No " mapping " biopsy needed (I envision a prostate gland that ends up looking like a swiss cheese!)
