A new

article has analyzed the cost:benefit ratio for photons versus protons and

finds that proton beam treatment is not cost effective. Nevertheless, several

centers are considering building proton beam units. I wonder if this isn't the

radiation therapy equivalent of the robotic surgery that I have previously discussed.

Marketing seems to dominate over significant improvements in treatment. I don't

recommend that men travel to facilities that market their radiation therapy

departments using proton technology. It isn't worth it in my view - little

evidence that your chances of being cured are improved and much higher cost and

inconvenience.

I am going to two meetings within the next 10 days where cost vs. benefit will

be a part of the discussion. It is a topic that has become very important. I
