Guest guest
http://www.revolutionhealth.com/blogs/michaelglodemd These are not my words but words from the above blog: A new article has analyzed the cost:benefit ratio for photons versus protons and finds that proton beam treatment is not cost effective. Nevertheless, several centers are considering building proton beam units. I wonder if this isn't the radiation therapy equivalent of the robotic surgery that I have previously discussed. Marketing seems to dominate over significant improvements in treatment. I don't recommend that men travel to facilities that market their radiation therapy departments using proton technology. It isn't worth it in my view - little evidence that your chances of being cured are improved and much higher cost and inconvenience. ****** I am going to two meetings within the next 10 days where cost vs. benefit will be a part of the discussion. It is a topic that has become very important. I will be representing the patient community. If anyone wants to give me feedback/stories about cost vs. benefit that might be helpful please write to me at kmeadelist@... Thank you.
