I have it right on the toolbar in Word so if I get stuck on a term I have it right there and can flip back and forth. I also like that you can do wildcard searches with it. I'm a tightwad too, but I think it was a good investment. I think having an electronic medical dictionary is an investment all MTs should make. I use the CD all throughout the day while working. I need to upgrade to the newer version. But I would definitely go CD again. One reason is that the book hurts my fingers...arthritis. But it also is just so handy to have it right there on the screen and so easy to search through. Trisha Stedman's on CD This question is for anyone who uses Stedman's Dictionary on CD ROM. A long time ago Chuck used to talk about Stedman's on CD and even sent me a site where I could buy it used. Being the procrastinator that I am, I never got around to actually ordering or buying it. Now that Jan has gotten the ball rolling, I got to thinking about it again. I went back through all of my e-mails and finally found the site that he had sent me. The ones that are available there are at a great price, around $24 plus shipping, but they were published in 1997 and say they are the 3rd edition. I just noticed at Stedman's that they are up to volume 5, updated in 2000. I am also a tightwad and hate to pay the price of $79.95 unless I absolutely have to. So, are any of you using the Stedman's on CD ROM, what do you think about it, is it really that much better than a print dictionary, is it worth the price, etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The one I found that is used is the Stedman's Concise with CD Rom, 3rd edition, 1997. That is the one that Chuck was suggesting that I buy used. Now what is the difference between that and what I found at Stedman's which was the Stedman's electronic dictionary; I didn't even see the Stedmans' Concise with CD there. Not that you have added to the confusion, but I really do want to know what the difference is so that I can make an informed decision before spending that money. QLDBE is not upgradable and seems like a lot to spend every single year. While I have the electronic version of QL, I know how out of date it already is. I bought it because I can have it running in the background....and can access it very quickly. It is spelling sensitive as with any dictionary...must know the correct spelling....I use it for instance to confirm certain procedures being performed, for the correct pluralization (sp) of a term, but the main reason I bought it was that....are you ever typing something over and over, you know it is spelled correctly, the doc uses it over and over...but you are not sure what the _____ it is? We cannot know everything for goodness sake...and like a dog with a bone, I NEED to investigate...which for me usually means looking it up in my Dorlands, on the web until this forever student has a good grasp on the full meaning and use of the term...Well...as you know, as much as we love to research and continue to expand our vocabularies, we also have to keep our clients happy and make money at what we do. (When I got out of school, my mentor told me that for the first year she was working in the field, she was working for free because she spent so much time continuing the process). Stedman's CD is a quick, easily accessible way to satisfy the 'beast within' and get on with the business of making some money.... Just my 2 cents....(or 79.95) worth. Guest guest Posted March 21, 2001 Report Share Posted March 21, 2001 I think that Stedman's and QLDBE are 2 different animals....I have both and use QL for drugs exclusively....Stedman's is not a great drug reference.
