Guest guest
I believe one has to take much more to get enough benefit from the algae omega-3 oil than from fish oil, and our kids on the spectrum need more DHA than EPA (that may not be true for adults who especially may need the cardiac benefits of the EPA). I like Nordic Naturals 90-gel bottles of ProDHA - 500mg of DHA and I think 120 of EPA per gel, a good ratio. ProDHA 90gels are in a strawberry flavor and easy for most kids to take. You can order them from several places on the internet - I get them from Vitamin Research Products (vrp.com) and that is also where I get the 5000iu tiny Vit D3 capsules which also go down pretty easily. I have all the kids on 5000iu of D3 daily now and at least 1000 and preferably 1500mg or more of DHA daily. I recommend you order the home test kit for Vit D3 and test after 3 months of 5000iu daily to see if the levels are near 70 ng/mL which is where we want them to be. If you're a 1st timer at vrp, give them my pin number 211032 for a 10% discount (which I then get on my next order for introducing you). I spoke to Dr. Cannell, and in his meeting with 16 Vit D experts, they all agreed there was no way to actually determine the best ratio between Vit A and D; it ranged all the way from 2 to 1 to 10 to 1, with most of them feeling it was closer to 10 than to 2. They settled on a 5D to 1A ratio as a safe bet since with so many variables it is impossible to give an exact number. As to calcium, he said for those who were showing high calciums, that when they were given very high doses of D the calcium would normalize. He suggested everyone give their kids 5000iu daily of D for 3 months, without doing any tests for calcium, and then do the home test for D and a serum calcium. He said no one has been reported anywhere near toxicity for this regime yet. He still does not think kids in the US need any CLO, but especially he doesn't like the ones that give a lot of A and not enough D - I have stopped recommending CLO myself.
