Our younger son has had cloudy urine for the past week. He has been on

antifungals, but other than that, there have not been any changes.

Can someone remind me what the possible causes are for cloudy urine?

Thanks, L

... you might check on UTI.. I'm sure there are other things too

but this is what it means at our house.

I agree a urinary infection always needs to be considered, but there are many

benign causes of cloudy urine, mostly from foods or some medicines.  Why don't

you wait until after the anti-fungals and see if it clears up?  That is, unless

he is uncomfortable, urine smells very strong, has urgency or pain etc.  -  even

dehydration can cause it, so push fluids if possible.  DrJM

If it is oxalates, it should precipitate out. If you have a microscope

you can compare the crystals to pictures of the different types of crystals.

I have a picture I could send you of how when one child was dumping the

crystals settled out in a test tube leaving a thick layer of crystals. It

was very obvious.

This is from:

Urinalysis: Turbidity

Now it's also important to look at the turbidity of the urine. When you

have a cloudy urine, you can have all kinds of things. It could be

bacteria. It could be leukocytes. Or it could just be crystals. As I said

before, urine that's in the refrigerator may turn cloudy because of the

precipitation of crystals. If that's the case, recentrifuging the urine,

acidifying it, or rewarming it to room temperature will clear the urine. It

will not clear a urine full of white cells and bacteria. When there are

crystals, most of the time it's the amorphous crystals that precipitate out

and give this cloudy color. And if it's an alkaline urine, that's going to

be phosphates. Or if it's an acid urine, it's going to be urates. A hazy

urine often is one that has a lot of mucus in it. And the mucus can be from

vaginal secretions. It can be from mucus threads in the urine. We see a

variety of children who have bladder augmentations with intestinal cells

that produce mucus, and we can see a thick mucus plugs in those urine. It's

rare for us to see a milky urine, but if there are a lot of fat globules in

the urine, you will see a milky color. And that's probably only going to be

seen in our population in someone with very severe nephrotic syndrome

that's uncontrolled, and they have a high cholesterol and a lot of oval fat

bodies in their urine. The most common thing we see is the smoky colored

urine. It's usually red-brown, and it's full of red blood cells.

Thanks Dr McCandless and ,

He is not uncomfortable and no other signs like elevated temps (never had a

UTI either). We'll wait it out. Thanks, L

You are probably right. We thought it might be bacteria, but we forgot that

we made a change in the diet and added in butternut chips to fill some

slots. The change was subtle at first with cloudy urine, but symptoms have

piled up. His primary symptoms beyond the cloudy urine have been: rubbing

his eyes, pinching his legs, hands, and forehead, and general irritation.

Other than removing the chips, what would you recommend to help. You can

type me offline if you wish at jjleon1@...
