Guest guest
Ruth I'm glad you brought up the gas thing because it gives me a chance to pass on my news. First of all, C has had severe gas episodes as you describe since birth (she's age 5 now and though they're less frequent, they're just as severe when they come on). We used Mylanta though it didn't help much more than the Mylicon did (not at all). What helped was a hot water bottle and letting her watch videos till the pain subsided (several hours later). Also, isn't Propulsid off the market? They're are so many warnings, I'd check with your dr immediately to see why he justifies continuing it with all the warnings. Anyway, C went to urology last week for follow up on her abnormal VCUG. In addition to the kidney reflux that they're giving her antibiotics for, they found a kink in her ureter just at the junction of the kidneys (the UPJ obstruction I spoke of a few weeks ago). Anyway, the dr said that the kink would lead to her urine getting clogged in her kidneys and it would cause very severe pain. So severe we'd be taking her to the ER, which we have done. We've always known that her abdominal pain could be caused by something and the gas could be secondary due to her swallowing air during excessive crying. Now it looks like that's the case. Have you done the VCUG? Get a copy of the radiology report and see if there's any notation of a possible blockage or kink. I wonder if this kink is a CHARGE thing and possibly the thing that makes CHARGE kids symptomatic of " colic well into their teens " . The urologist said the next time she has a spell, we're too take her in (his office or ER) for a sonogram immediately. If on the sonogram her kidney is severely enlarged, it would mean this is what's causing her abdominal pain from time to time and he'll have to surgically repair it. I feel so bad that I've left this go for so long--BUT I DIDN'T KNOW. The urologist said that this problem is usually only found in kids who's parents or GI dr's gave up on looking for a GI problem and they get referred to urology. In the meantime, try to make your little one as comfortable as possible during the episode. We worried that Caitlyn would get spoiled and want videos all the time but that has rarely happened. USually she just wants to be asleep and if she's in pain she just wants it to go away. Sorry to ramble.
