JMO, but it sounds to me like you didn't have sufficient wiring already in

existence for the phone guy to do it without running another wire from the

pole. If I'd known in advance you were going to do that I could have told

you the easiest and cheapest way to get a phone line is to call the phone

company and tell them you just bought a two line phone and need the second

line activated. What they do in that case is since every phone line has 4

different colored wires, and a regular phone line only has " juice " running

through 2 of them, when you make the request as I stated it, they just come

and take you existing line and get " juice " to the other 2 colors... way

cheaper than running a whole new line. It's only if you need a third line

that you'd have to get a whole new line run. Ahh well.. 20/20 hindsight.

Let me know if I've confused you because I'm sure I didn't explain that very

well. :/

Absolutely.. which is why they'd never volunteer the information I just gave

you... The first time I had checked into getting a second phone line

installed they gave me some song and dance about running a new phone line and

it would be more $$ if I was planning on using the phone line for any type of

computer equipment since they'd have to make sure there was " juice " to all

four wires, so I dropped the idea at the time. Then, a friend of mine

explained the two line phone idea to me and how much cheaper it was to do it

that way. Ahh well, live and learn. If you decide you need a third phone

line, use the two line phone request and it will be much cheaper

Well the phone man just left. What a lazy bum! He wouldn't even go down to

the crawlspace to run the phone line from the other room to my office. He

wanted to run the phone wire around the baseboards and staple them to the

wall. I called my husband at work and he said, " NO WAY. " He told me to tell

the guy to leave and that we weren't going to pay him to do that and my

husband said if the other phone line is already put in, then he will go down

in the crawlspace and do it himself. Sheesh-you would thing installing phone

lines for a living you would expect having to go in a crawlspace or 2, but he

said he won't go in crawlspaces. My husband was not impressed and said I

should call the phone company and complain. Nah forget it I'm not wasting my

breath. They won't give a you know what anyway probably!

Yes you certainly should notify the phone company so the " lazy bum " doesn't

tell his bosses that he completed the installation, which he didn't, and

which could make a major difference in what you are charged. Case in point:

We recently had cable installed and since our TVs were calble ready, we

didn't need converter boxes and special remotes. Lo a behold, a few months

later I noticed on my bills that I was being charged for the converter boxes

and remotes. I called the cable company and not only did a receive a credit

on my bill for converter boxes and remotes I didn't have, but was informed

that if I hadn't notified them, when we decide to move out of here one day,

they'd have been wanting us to return those converter boxes and remotes and

would have charged us big bucks for not having them and never having notified

that we didn't have them. It's exasperating to have to deal with these

people, but the $5 a month they were charging me adds up, never mind the

hassle I'd have gone through if and when we move from here and the charges

they'd have tried to inflict on me for the nonexistent converters and

remotes.

Just my 2 cents.. or $5

Hmmm.........okay you guys really got me thinking now about getting a cell

phone. I've never really wanted one before because I always thought they

were too cliche' and I can't stand people who talk out loud in public on

them! That is such a big pet peeve of mine! I never really thought about

having one instead of a regular phone. I will have to talk to my hubby and

see what he thinks. He has a cell phone, but it is for work and his work

pays the bill ) He told me before I could get one from the company he

works for and we would be able to call each other on the 2 way radio (as if I

don't get enough of him LOL!) I will think about this......Thanks.

My hubby and I have two cell phones (we just got his last night) with

about

3000 minutes between them, including free long distance. We cancelled our

long distance service on our home phone a couple of months ago and just

used my cell phone to make our long distance calls. We're going to wait a

couple of months before deciding if we are going to just completely cancel

our home phone service and use our cells. We're paying $70 a month for

3,000 minutes for them, whereas our home phone is $30 a month just to have

the phone, plus we were paying almost 7 cents a minute for long

distance. Plus, with the cells, we both have voice mail, caller ID, and

numeric paging, all for free. My mom and sister are thinking of doing the

same thing. We have cable modem, so we don't have to worry about the

internet connection. I tell ya, these phone companies need to start

working FOR their customers, not against them, when it comes to pricing

because there are a lot more people out there who have cells instead of

home service because it's so much cheaper.

Just my two cells . . . er . . . cents worth! :-)

I have heard of something like that, but my husband is like a teenager and

likes to be on the phone and chit chat a lot so that would not work. We are

constantly fighting over whether I get to be on the puter or whether he gets

to make a phone call so I broke down and had another phone line installed. I

personally hate the phone and cringe whenever it rings so the only reason I

need a phone is for the Internet! So now I got my own line and he has his!

When you call the phone company and tell them you bought a 2 line phone, they

give you the second phone # then while they are on the phone with you. As I

said, each phone wire has 4 smaller wires in it, each of a different color.

For the sake of argument I'll use red, yellow, blue, and white (although I

don't recall exactly which colors they really are). So, for your one phone

line right now, the only 2 wires that have " juice " are the red and yellow...

so to get the second line number they attach " juice " to the blue and white.

Voila! You have 2 phone lines and they didn't have to run another wire. The

point of this, of course, is to produce the end result, but save $$ because

they don't have to run another wire, all they have to do is " juice " the 2

smaller wires that were dead. Then, as I said before, the only way you have

to get that actual wire run is when you want a 3rd phone line .. like I have

right now. In my house Line one is the home phone, line 2 (which is the

other 2 wires from line 1) is my work line, and line 3 is how I'm able to be

on AOL and work at the same time and still have the home phone line clear for

incoming or outgoing calls. Actually, the original reason I had the third

line run was because when I worked for the hospital from home I needed the

home line, the second line was for the Dictaphone to be able to dial into the

hospital, and the third line was for the work computer to be able to be

dialed into the hospital computer system to be typing " live " into their

computer system. When we were outsourced to Edix, I only needed 1 phone line

for work, but I kept the third line as stated above, to be online on AOL/web

so I can look things up without having to disconnect from the work computer,

if that makes sense. Line 2 and Line 3 are just your basic no frills lines

(no caller ID, etc.), and billed together on a separate bill from my home #

for tax purposes. This idea of cell phones is very interesting though, and

I'll have to check into that to see if something like that would be cheaper

than the 3 lines I have now.

I neglected to mention that my hubster has his own computer and his own AOL

account, so when I'm not working, he uses Line 2 (the one I use during the

day for Edix) for signing on. That way in the evenings we can both be online

at the same time and still receive incoming calls. It's pretty neat

Yikes no!!! The phone company would have a hissy fit. However, if your

friend is talented, you could have them install your phone jack for you AFTER

the phone man comes and puts " juice " to the wires and you have the phone #.

Actually, what the friend would need to do is when the phone man comes he

will tell you which colors are for which lines, so when your friend goes to

install the jack for line 2 he'll know which colors to connect in that

jack... or have I lost you completely :/

Actually, I just found out recently that if you go to a home

improvement/hardware type store and purchase a phone jack kit, there's a

diagram in there that explains pretty much exactly what I'm talking about.

Yes, exactly what my husband will be doing. Lazy bones today installed the

2nd phone line (outside) and my husband will run the wire through the

crawlspace and up to my office and put in a jack there.

If it wasn't for the fact that we live in a " dead spot " and our cell phones

I agree w/Jan. Call the phone company and complain. I would not pay for what

he didn't do. If you don't get satisfaction w/the customer rep you get on

the phone then ask to speak to a supervisor. I hope you don't get ripped

off.

Okay, question. If you use a second line phone how do you get a separate

phone number without calling the phone company in. I find this whole

discussion fascinating and informative. My cell phone is only used in an

emergency in case I am out of the house and mom is in trouble (though she

probably would not know how to use a phone anyway!) I use a prepaid card

and invariably end up losing time and money as I don't use it much.

Thanks. I recall calling the phone company and they actually encouraged

me to have someone hook up the lines. Even when the cable was installed

they advised a non- telephone-employee to do it?! Thanks for the warning

though.

Your phone man must be from Ohio. My guy that hooked up my second line a

few years back wouldn't go into the crawl space either. What a " lazy but " .

Diane--you are doing something I have wondered about but

haven't had the guts to try! I have a dedicated phone line for

my internet service (56K) and between that and the household

phone, our bills run in excess of $100 a month.

While we drool over all the commercials we see on TV for DSL-

" Free connection, first month free, free modem! " , our local company

doesn't have any special intro offers for DSL--you pay to connect,

you pay for every month, and you pay for the modem!

Hehe! I'd be in big trouble if I stayed on line all the time, Ginny!

Our internet service is for 250 hours a month, after that they charge

you for each hour you are over. I really thought most internet services

had gone to " unlimited " usage for a fee until we moved here! Of course,

if I would spring for DSL, we'd have unlimited usage too!
