Guest guest
He's autistic? That's odd... cause I saw an interview of him, and the reviewer called him retarded and she was never corrected... stupid TV people. Kerri autism movie- " I am Sam " I just saw a movie review from another list about the Penn movie, which I thought was about a retarded man. It turns out that he is autistic. The review was pretty positive. Penn usually plays such obnoxious characters, that it might be worth it just to see how he pulls it off. The character in this one, I guess is less the sterotype, has a dtr and a job (starbucks-its a job). I wonder if anyone heard about this. It might be worth checking out. Guest guest
I bet the producers all consider anything less than " perfect " to be retarded anyway... The last review I read of it said he was " intellectually " like a 7 year old.... who knows... Guest guest
well, i thought i'd be smart and get the " official " answer. so i went to the movie's site at new line cinemas and it says...mentally-challenged...so, i guess it's left to the viewer's imagination? :-/ " Help! Guest guest
In the commercial, I saw him ask at a lunch counter for them to separate the lima beans in a dish -- and I KNEW. And then Pfieffer told him " That's impossible, " and went on to order about 3 things prepared in a specific way -- and that obvious poking fun at the NT world really appealed to me! i will see this, probably on video though. Guest guest
--Jacquie, I didnt see this scene in the commercial, but, it does sound like the old familar OCD. In the one review, that stated he was " mentally challenged " they went on to describe his " compulsive behavior " well thats more linked to autism than retardation. Maybe I have to just get to the movie, that was one of my resolutions to go out to movies. Guest guest
I saw the beautiful mind, and thought that character looked autistic (aspergers) as well as schizophrenic. They made references to his childhood as having poor social skills, and being fixated on numbers. However, no one in the media got his diagnosis confused (even when he had some traits that were not necessarily ones related to schizophrenia). They just said he was odd, lacking social skills prior to the onset of his illness (schizophrenia). Guest guest
Haven't seen the movie. I did see the reviews but autism didn't occur to me. I think the entertainment industries leave it open ended for one good reason... It gets people talking about the movie and then people go and see it. Clever marketing... Guest guest
Prior to the schizophrenia? I hadn't heard about that. I'll have to wait til video, but I want to see that movie even more now. I hear Crowe is fantastic. He probably won't get the 2 times running but I've heard people say he deserves it. Guest guest
Because OCD has almost been a media darling. " Normal " people have it. That's almost been the catchphrase. The talk shows have their guests on, the experts make it clear " perfectly normal " -- " average " -- people from all walks of life have it. Then everybody takes their free book home. Sorry to sound so cynical. But there was a while there when OCD was almost " IN " . Autism, on the other hand scares the hell out of people. Guest guest
Cinnamon, I dont think that their was any publically surmisted opionin about autism, but, i heard from another list, that at some aspergers conference they thought Nash may have had a theory about him. The discussion on my ny autism list thought that he look autistic in the movie, and someone wrote to his website and asked if he thought he was Aspergers, no response. It was a pretty good movie, and Crowe did a great job. Thea > > I saw the beautiful mind, and thought that character looked > autistic > > (aspergers) as well as schizophrenic. Guest guest
Penny, Probably because as a lawyer one needs to pay attention to small details, and like Jacquie said, sort of sarcasm about the NT world. Guest guest
I think they worded it " mentally challenged " for that very reason. All of the conditions, including autism, can fall under " challenged. " This way, there was no ONE group hounding them for how they didn't represent the condition properly, etc. etc. I can't say I blame them either. My cousin saw this, and told me it was about a mentally " retarded " person. I don't know where she got that impression, but it didn't seem that she thought it be about autism in any way. It's probably a blend of all kinds of conditions.... So it might be hard to tell based on social deficits, etc, as those are all part of the schizophrenia dx too. Salli
Guest guest
Yup, as I've said, they all pretty much consider anything less than perfectly normal the same disability. Guest guest
---Salli, Childhood schizophrenia is very rare. There was no indication of his having delusions and hallucinations as a child, that is the hallmark of schizophrenia. It was noted in the movie, and excerpt from his book that he was a lonely and isolated child, who was more into numbers than other children. The social defiects in schizophrenia usually come much closer to the onset of the positive symptoms( sometimes it is preceded by schizod personality though). Being that my brother in law is diagnosed schizophrenic, I can tell you that he had very good social skills prior to his schiozphrenic episode. He did have a depressive episode months before and was on meds that led him to isolate, but, he wasnt like this the first time I met him several years ago. My mother had a friend who was schizophrenic and she was pretty socialable when she was not activitly psychotic. At that time, she's pretty scary. My bil also met a guy in the hospital that it was extremely difficult to tell what was wrong with him although he was in the hospital. I was very surprised to see that he was there, it was unbelievable. I kinda suspected he was using drugs. But, it is true, that autism used to be called childhood schizophrenia because there are some of the same features. Im sorry to ramble on like this, it seems that both autism and schizophrenia were destined to be a part of my life. Thank goodness my bil is doing well and working.
