Guest guest
Keep looking, Salli! I know they are out there. I will keep an eye out and if I see any here I will pick them up for you. Has anyone bought the busybee vocabulary builder videos? I never got an answer last time I asked so will ask again. I really want them for Ebony, but I don't want to get them if they don't work. Some of it is real reading and some of it is just hyperlexia. He really doesn't understand the signs at the pool nor does he have a strong concept for the month of January; he can just read the words because of his excellent visual memory. So at the grocery store yesterday I saw a little box of sight words flashcards and I bought them, thinking that Putter would enjoy them. I have never seen such stupid words in my life! Putter will NOT learn this nonsense I am sure: this, that, on, of, at, the, etc., etc. Why? Why not animals? Why not numbers? Why not NOUNS, for heaven's sake? Are they trying to bore my little Putter to death? Salli
Guest guest
Salli Though names of animals, foods ect are very useful, they are not considered sight words at least in the educational community. For example you can depict a picture of a dog, but not this, that, on, of, at, the, Therefore they are considered sight words. There are some nice sets of flash cards that Putter would some enjoy. I found some at Wal-Mart a while back. Guest guest
I think that there that reading entails two types of decoding-memory and phonics. I think sight words are ones that are commonly used in reading and that children memorize as well as names of common objects. Words are not as easily recognized are supposed to be broken down via sounding them out. The rest is the child learning comprehension. I think does all, memory, phonics and comprehension in different degrees. However,he doesnt always do it upon command. I think that his first word to read was his name at 18 months. when he was 3 or 4 he was reading the words, in, on, under from a lotto game. He started to write his first words from memory around a year and half ago. It was stop, dont walk, book, mandee, my. He started to write out whole sentences about 6 months ago from memory. He writes stuff out like " I want to take the train " Or " I want to go outside " I think there are different types of hyperlexia in terms of decoding, etc. Thea > Salli Though names of animals, foods ect are very useful, they are not considered sight words at least in the educational community. Also, look for a " WonderBoard " (probably at a school supply store)...it is a magnetic board with all kinds of individual words to use with it...you are supposed to make up poems, or do shapes, math, etc...but I got one for to learn to read with. Last, look on the computer at the kids' preschool sites...often they have printable flash cards. Have fun... Raena

Guest guest
Yeah, I bought cards like that, and they were useless, so I made my own. I made a list of things was interested in (firetrucks, dinosaurs, numbers) and printed the cards off the computer, using the MS Paint program and cardstock. I borrowed a paper cutter to cut them. loved them and they worked very well. Also, I could add new words as we went along. I used different colours for different groups that I made up. First we did words for stuff in a house, animals, shapes or whatever other category he might find amusing. We did groups of doing words (verbs) that thought were fun also. Eventually we added groups of words like prononounds, adjetives and adverbs, and those lovely boring linking words. Because writing was/is such a chore I had him use his word cards to make sentances and at that point we introduced punctuation.
