Guest guest Posted December 11, 2003 Report Share Posted December 11, 2003 Debbie - Thanks for checking up on us. We went to see the orthotist yesterday and he was very pleased with Livy's progress. There are some major lumps on her head and they have gotten larger since her last visit 2 weeks ago. He warned us to watch out for her red spots because of all her hair. He said they are not from pressure but from friction. Also, he said the growth is coming in the back and her forehead is looking even and rounded. So we are glad for any progress. As for the doctors, I spoke with the cranial facial person after he spoke with the neuro who made the referral (they have worked together forwever). First he said the neuro told me about the holes being created by the brain pressing on her skull. What the neuro told me was that the plates are not frankly closed or ridged over and that the holes remain open and look good. That is totally different from the brain is pressing on her skull and CREATING holes in her skull. Then the cranial facial guy got very unpleasant when I asked for clarification as to the diagnosis and if he would be willing to speak with our second opinion doctor and review the scan together. He just about lost it when I asked him if there is a name for the condition (thumbprinting or copper beading) in order to better educate myself. He said this is a gray area of cranio. He impatiently asked me, did you not see the holes I pointed out to you on the scan? As if I didn't believe him. I think he is defensive because he thinks I am challenging his diagnosis. All I am asking for is clarification. We are trying to figure out what our next move will be. Since no one is saying she needs surgery (yet), we have a few weeks/months to sort this all out. Sadly, my little girl cat has been not feeling well and the vet found a large tumor in her GI area. We will find out this afternoon what the pathology lab finds out from her biopsy results. She adopted us 5 years ago when she visited our house (we had just moved in). The vet thinks she was about 10 years old when we got her. We already had her treated for hyperthyroidism in 1999 with radioactive iodine treatment at Univ. of Tenn. in Knoxville (350 mile roundtrip 2 times) and that was very successful. And with Christmas and Livy's birthday coming up in less than a month, I'm barely hanging on. I'm so so so sorry to hear about your bad appt w/the specialist. I get so mad when I read stories like yours where Drs are so down right rude and nonchalant about things, serious things. It breaks my heart. I hope you can get some good answers about the holes soon, more importantly, a solution to this condition. I'm also sorry to hear about your cat. I know how you feel. I had to put my 17 yr old cat to sleep 5 yrs ago for a hyperthyroid (like yours!) and boy it just killed me. I cried for 3 days straight I think. Pets are just like family members. I hope you can get the tumor treated and the cat will be ok. *sigh* Big big big hugs, hope things in 2004 will turn around for the better for you & your family. Please keep us posted.
