Guest guest
Helen I had RRP in 1996, it is true to say that the first day I didn't look good, but felt OK because I was on morphine. Day 2 I looked better but felt worse, less morphine! With full RRP it takes a week or two before the patient can shower without feeling tired. The first week it is drips and waiting for the gass to pass through, before I was allowed to eat. Catheter removal can be traumatic - the lucky ones are continent straight away. For others it takes time. Have some pads ready to catch the drips! Hope it is the 100% cure we all look for and incontinence and other side effects are minimal. Best wishes opeartion MY husband is going into hospital on tuesday 2nd oct to have cancer removed i would just like to know what to exspect after his operation when he got results from his mri scan he was told the scan isnt 100% acurate so we are not sure if his cancer has spread or not will they be able to find out during his operation .and what can i do to help muy husband during his weeks or mnths of recovery .Helen 49g . Guest guest
Hi Helen for those of us who have already gone through treatment/surgery or w.h.y. it would help to know your husband's age/PSA readings, Gleason score if biopsied and type/method of surgery etc., that he will have. I wish him and you all the best.HELEN wrote: MY husband is going into hospital on tuesday 2nd oct to have cancer removed i would just like to know what to exspect after his operation when he got results from his mri scan he was told the scan isnt 100% acurate so we are not sure if his cancer has spread or not will they be able to find out during his operation .and what can i do to help muy husband during his weeks or mnths of recovery .Helen 49g .Andy Watt Tonight's top picks. Guest guest
Helen; I believe what Andy is saying about the need to know... age, psa etc. is that when the medical practitioners determine what is the best approach for the patient, they STAGE the cancer by using these found markers so that you either are a candidate for surgery or you may fare better if you begin a treatment of chemical castration with injections of medicines that stop the production of testosterone that is food for cancer. Or take sessions of radiation and other forms of treatment. Andy... like a very great amount of people better equipped than I on this site for your desire to know, have more information to give you . And please know there are no stupid questions here. You must be prepared to read everything you can get on prostate cancer , either on the network or the Cancer Society links.or by getting their literature (which is free by the way.) Just know that we are all one big family here and all of us are sincerely hoping for your mans recovery. and/or good healing. Bill . Guest guest
Helen-Your husband will have mild to moderate pain post op. It felt like I got kicked in the stomach, and only needed tylenol for pain. He will be up walking that night, probably sent home in 1-2 days depending on his progress. The one thing I would advise is to go slowly with solid or semi-solid food. They had me eating soft food the next day, and I wasn't ready for it. I had severe abdominal cramping 2-3 night out. I would recommend an extra day with liquids, yogurt, etc.The catheter will stay in for 10-12 days. I got a larger "drainage" bag for at night, he can wear the leg bag during the day. Also, I got some K-Y jelly to lubricate the tip of the penis where the catheter exits. This lessens irritation. He can exercise by walking immediately, and will be encouraged to do so. After the catheter is removed, he will be encouraged to do the kegel's exercises. They are very important for control of his bladder. The incontinence may make him frustrated, so patience is very important. It took me six months to become about 98% continent. Certain exercises at the gym, or if I bend over while at my desk if my bladder is full, will cause a minor amount of leakage (I am 9 months out from my surgery).Exercising is very important, including treadmill, running and weight training. These restore strength, energy and will make him feel like his normal self earlier. Finally, impotence may be a major problem. It may take up to 2 years even if he has had the "nerve sparing" surgery. Communication, discussion, patience and understanding by both you and your husband are very important. He will become discouraged at times, but it is important for him to keep a positive attitude throughout, and not let his disease beat him. Good luck and I hope all goes well. . Guest guest
Helen, I had surgery (radical prostectomy) last December. I was very sore for about 3 days, 2 of which were in the hospital. I walked several times a day post surgery, but very slowly. It was about a week before I started seeing some improvement, but did eventually get back to my old self. My bigest problem was, and still is incontenance. I've tryied doing Kegals, but when I do them, the incontenance seems to get worse (for me). I am a lot better than I was after surgery, but frustratingly not healed. Depending on my activities, I go through 1 to 2 pads a day. On the other hand, I DIDN'T have much problems with impotance. But the cancer was determined to be in the margins of the prostrate that was removed. So I am on a hormone therapy that has caused impotance, among other problems. Now I use Viagra which seems to work pretty good. The surgeon should also remove some lymp nodes and have them checked to see if the cancer has spread. But, I have no regrets on my decision, no looking back. Good luck with everything, Jack opeartion MY husband is going into hospital on tuesday 2nd oct to have cancer removed i would just like to know what to exspect after his operation when he got results from his mri scan he was told the scan isnt 100% acurate so we are not sure if his cancer has spread or not will they be able to find out during his operation .and what can i do to help muy husband during his weeks or mnths of recovery .Helen 49g . Guest guest
Good luck tomorrow. I too had an RRP -- at Cleveland Clinc. One week of discomfort. Not much more painful than any other surgery. Catheter was a bother but not painful at all. Walked very next day. Showered in 3 days. Catheter was removed in 7 days. No leakage at all since then (9 months now). Prostate was dissected in full after surgery and all cancer was found to be contained and removed. PSA after 3 months and 6 months revealed neglicble (nadir) PSA. Sexual function works with the following sequence of 1/2 pill of Cialis day 1; 1/2 day 2; and full pill day 3....sex day! Hope all goes as well for you both.
