Hello Everyone I Need Help

I am a female with Autism the Aspergers Kind I am not feeling good because I

have been Diagnosed with ANEMIA or LOW IRON. I am not getting better at all from

being VERY ANEMIC at all and Now I have to take Iron Tablets which have made me

MAJORLY CONSTIPATED. I have been crying over the fact I am MAJORLY CONSTIPATED

BECAUSE I DO NOT WANT TO BE CONSTIPATED AT ALL and because another thing I enjoy

doing is donating blood(Helping Others). I have some questions and my questions

are:

1. What can I do to get better from being VERY ANEMIC because I do not want to

be on IRON PILLS for the rest of my life?

2. What can I do to get rid of the MAJOR CONSTIPATION with takeing the IRON

PILLS because I have am MAJORLY CONSTIPATED?

If you know the answers to my questions please let me know. Thank you to anyone

I am not a doctor, nor do I pretend to be one. Anything I say should be

taken with a grain of salt, and you should consult a doctor. Arse

covered, I have been anemic or borderline-anemic my whole life. They've

tried to put me on the iron pills a few times, but I can't stand them.

There are a few things you can do. One is to exercise, to help build up

your blood. Two is alternative supplements: you can take blackstrap

molasses (I've been told 1 tablespoon 3 times a day), or you can take

Floradix, a liquid supplement available with iron that you can get at

places like Whole Foods. The Floradix does not cause the constipation

that the prescription iron pills do. Third, eat more leafy green

vegetables. Seriously, since I started doing this, my blood counts have

been MUCH better. Broccoli, dark lettuce (not iceberg), spinach, any of

that. Doesn't matter how you eat it, I usually get my broccoli in

beef-and-broccoli at the Chinese restaurant. :) Fourth, eat more whole

grains, especially oats and barley. Oatmeal, stout beers, things like

that. Fiber helps with constipation, and oatmeal and stout beers in

particular can help some with blood counts.

If you're going to try these kinds of natural/alternative solutions, and

you are seriously anemic (not just borderline), MAKE SURE you do it

under a doctor's supervision, with regular blood tests to make sure

you're not slipping back down again.

Hi Channing!

I have the same problem, due to various medications I must take. Try taking

the Iron every other day, instead daily. Also, eat a lot of fiber-rich foods

like fruits and veggies. You can also try taking Philips magnesium pills in

combination with a stool softener and/or Milk of Magnesia. Constipation can

be very stubborn, so try various over-the-counter remedies or ask your

doctor to prescribe something stronger. Hope something helps.

Hi Channing,

There is something you can take that doesn't tend to cause problems to cure

constipation, called Coloxyl with Senna. Ask the pharmacist, because it might

have a different name where you are to what it's called in Australia. There's

also Nulax, which is kind of like dried fruit again with Senna in it. Prunes are

good too, if you can't stand eating them, you can boil them up and drink the

water (it's what they give babies who can't eat yet, as they often have

constipation when you change their formula). LOTS of fluid is essential whether

you are taking anything else or not, and by lots I mean PINTS or LITRES of it.

Not just a couple of cups a day, but 8 glasses minimum. Many people are at least

partly dehydrated most of the time because they don't drink enough.

For anaemia, I second what the others have said, Red meat is high in iron, as is

basically any vegetable that is green. Parsley is also high in iron.Try not to

overcook any of the veges, if you can cook them in a microwave that's a bonus

because you don't lose any nutrients in the cooking process, because you only

need about a spoonful of water in the dish.

I can understand you wanting to donate blood, I can't, ironically because I have

too much iron and hemoglobin in my blood. (side effect of a medication I have to

take).

That's interesting that they tell you that you can't donate. My dad is

ordered to donate as often as possible because otherwise his iron does

get dangerously high.
