Guest guest Posted January 3, 2002 Report Share Posted January 3, 2002 Yes and no. It has helped tremendously with the sleep and she has been seeking interactions with other people more. But, we are also seeing some problem behaviors and she is gaining weight at an alarming rate. I need to get another baby gate to put above the one I have now cause she climbs over it and raids the refridgerator. The school is saying that she is not playing with toys like she was and seems much more sensory needy, although she has always needed a lot of sensory stimulation, now she needs even more. At home, she is mostly the same as at school...a lot of sensory needs. We have had a rash of poop smearings...it was up to three or more times a day. And getting into anything really, climbing even more than usual, jumping from things, running into people and walls with a lot of force. We are also seeing an increase is stimulatory behaviors, especially the eyes. Like hand flapping and looking at things out of the corner of her eyes. Also lining things up. I really hate to give up the reliable whole night of her sleeping...I still have to get up with the baby....but we may need to make a change, soon. She has an appointment on the eight with the psychiatrist. We'll see what he says. P.S. This also seemed to help her mood swings. I have a suspition that she may be bipolar and this has helped even out her moods some. She still has bad days, but not like before. Hope that helps... 's neurologist said that the risperdal would help him have a better appetite..maybe get him to eat a bigger variety of foods...like fruits and veggies..he mainly eats things like buttered toast, chicken nuggets, hot dogs, pbj, etc. He did not say he would gain alot of weight! He made it sound like a good thing..and gaining weight at an alarming rate does not sound like a positive thing! I think that we haven't noticed a big increase in his appetite because he is on such a small dose right now! I am definately going to bring this up with him when we see him again. He started at 4 1/2 and at that time weighted about 42 lbs. He is now at about 58. Most of the gain was at the beginning - it has really leveled out the last 9 months or so. He is on .5 mg twice per day (He also takes Depakote) It was a really tough decision for us to put him on it but he was being violent (I was pregnant and worried about how he would act toward the baby) and his emotions were all over the place. Things are soooooo much better now. We tried a lot of different things and this has worked the best by far. It did not help him sleep. For that we give him phenergan which is an anti-nausua medicine. I give it to him at 5 and he is usually in bed by 9 (versus 11 or 12). It really makes a big difference when he gets a good night's sleep. The Risperdal is expensive. We pay about $60 after insurance just for it each month but we are looking into some of the mail order pharmacies that may save a little. Hopefully your insurance is better!! Sounds like it is really helping Nicolas. was not violent..he was just so hyper..climbing on top of the car, jumping off the furniture, etc. and not focusing as well in school..that his neuro felt it was worth trying him on the Risperdal. He does seem a bit calmer..I wish it would help him with his sleeping habits. I think if it helps it's worth a bit of weight gain and hopefully it will level out for good. We are lucky, we have a prescription plan with our insurance (Oxford) so we have to just pay a $15 copayment for the Risperdal. She is much more willing to try different foods. Her diet is still very limited, but she has tried meats recently...she ate hamburger, ham, bread, oranges, she's eating cereal (with milk even!) and peanut butter. These are all things she would not even consider eating before. It's just that she seems to want to eat massive amounts of everything all the time!! She will take the loaf of bread and stuff whole slices into her mouth. This from a girl who has never eaten bread before in her life. Very weird!! I would ask about it or watch for this if they increase the dosage. Ebony takes 1 mg per day in one dose. She is 4 1/2 and I don't know exactly what she weighs now, but she was around fifty pounds. I do know she is outgrowing her jeans that I bought for her for school in August and they were big on her then. I am also going to stop on the way and get a second gate to put over the one I have (higher) to try to stop her from getting into the kitchen. She will have to go on a very strict diet if she is going to continue to crave foods like this. She ate turkey, too. On friday we made a big turkey dinner and she ate it!!
