That does make sense. In the US, what you describe are

" illegal drugs " .

Pharmacies used to be called " drug stores " ( " chemist " was mostly UK

and Australia); hence " drug store cowboy " , " drug store fountain "

(prepared fizzy drinks and ice cream), etc.

I suppose the illegal connotation of " drugs " may have originated

here. Laws addressing illegal substances were called " drug laws " ,

etc. If " drugs " hadn't referred to legal substances, then it would

make sense that one seeking " drugs " would be looking for substances

along the category of heroin or LSD.

**Also, cocaine and heroin used to be legal and were found as active

ingredients in many drugs less than a century ago. Marijuana was legal then,

too.

What I take to sleep, what I take to handle my depression, alter my mind. Am

I then a 'druggie'? No.

The illegal drug culture has its own nomenclature and terminology, apart

from what those who use medications legally. Just because some of those are

taken and used illegally does not make one a drug addict or druggie.

Sheesh, this thread is getting worse all the time!

Amsterdam. Possibly all of Holland, I don't know, but people go to

Amsterdam to visit the pot cafes.

One good sources is NORML

http://www.norml.org/

Which fights to reform Marijuana laws. (Basically, the severity of the laws are

not equivalent to it's dangers OR on par with other drugs with similar effects

such as alcohol.)

FAQ

http://www.norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=3418

Also, the Lancet (for all of its loss of face in the ASD community, still a

medical journal) rates Marijuana as less dangerous than either Alcohol or

Tobacco. I understand the Alcohol being mroe dangerous claim, but the tobacco

one I'm skeptical about.

Here's a list of states that have decriminalized, on some level, Marijuana

usage. Basically, these states treat it on prt with a traffic violation.

http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=6331

Here are the states with *Medical* Marijuana laws:

http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=3391

Note that not all have the same levels of protection- for example, CA and NM

have broader allowances, while land just considers Medicinal use to be a

mitigating factor in sentencing. Also, some cops even in non-legal states have

accepted scripts from out of staters, though this is not to be relied on.

Here's LEAP (or the Law Enforcement Against Prohibition)

http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php

CNN had a series on 360 a couple of months ago on this? I think?

I wonder if it's because tobacco can kill whereas marijuana can " only "

send some people psychotic? Also marijuana isn't physically addictive

while tobacco most definitely is.

**Maybe pure tobacco is safe, but the stuff that's in most brands of

cigarettes has dozens of chemicals added to it and was actually bred to be

higher in nicotine, so as to be more addictive. Then there's the filters,

which, I'm told, add further toxicity.

The Coca Cola bottling company. They import coca leaves to make Coca Cola.

During the manufacturing process, the cocaine is removed, of course; I believe I

remember reading somewhere that it is subsequently sold to pharmaceutical

companies (there are purposes for which cocaine is used lawfully, most notably

in dentistry).
