Guest guest
, I'm sorry about the U of M helmet situation... They use a Danmar Helmet. I just checked, and the Danmar helmet is for use from 3 - 14 months of age, so no wonder they won't use it for you daughter! However, there are so many places you can choose from in the state of Michigan. Have you been to the Helmet/Band Database in the Database section of the group? When you open the Database, you can type " Michigan " in the database search field in the upper right corner. I just looked in the Database, and there are three different types of helmets in your state (many locations) that will treat babies up to 18 months of age. They are the Starband, Becker Band, and Ballert. I don't know if anyone has used the Becker Band, but we have group members who've used the Starband and Ballert. The DOCband treats babies up to 24 months of age. They have clinics in Wisconson, Illinois, and Ohio. You should check their website at www.cranialtech.com to see exactly where these offices are. You are right, older babies CAN get get correction. Here is a study that shows it: Treatment of the " older " infant with plagiocephaly This study documents that even though early intervention is best, treatment can still be successful even if the child is older than 12 months of age. http://www.neurosurgery.org/focus/sep00/9-3-5.pdf I hope this information helps, Christie (Mom to Repo'd Remy) -- In Plagiocephaly , " shesalittlelady " <fivedranch@v...> wrote: > They said that treatment will not work much or at all if children > are a year or older. Guest guest
Although this information may be correct for this particular helmet there are orthisis that treat as old as 24 months of age. Have you checked out our " database " of bands/helmets to see if there is anything else you would like to try? I would hate to see you not treat Faith's plagio because of this. Good Luck and let us know what you hear back. Dustie > They said that treatment will not work much or at all if children > are a year or older. Guest guest
Yes, becaues of the way the helmet works that's why it's better for younger kids. It basically as told to me by them it has a hold to the places that are in the right shape and allows room for growth in the other areas. The purpose is to direct the growth in the areas that need it while allowing the whole head to grow as needed. Since their growth at 16 months is mcuh slower it wouldn't work much. I belive there is a dr. out of childrens in detroit that also uses the star band. They use both the danmar helmet and the star band. WHen i was looking into it, i called orthomerica and they gave me locations of where in the metro detroit they use star bands and one was a dr. out of children's hospital in detroit. If you call them, they can give you the name and number as an option or to speak iwth the dr. I don't have his information any more since we didn't use that route. > > They said that treatment will not work much or at all if children > > are a year or older. Guest guest
Hi, In a 16 month old child a passive helmet wouldn't work, as they rely on growth. Orthomerica will only band a baby up until 18 months. I think your only option is Cranial Tech as they'll band a baby up until 24 months. > They said that treatment will not work much or at all if children > are a year or older.
