Guest guest
Hi, Honestly, this sounds more like a psychiatric disturbance to me. I would look into such things as schizophrenia, schizoid/schizotypal personality disorders, bipolar disorder, psychotic depression...things like that. There are so many symptoms that are not present that I would personally doubt it would be LBD, especially at his age, regardless of familial history. You only mention that Lyrica has been tried, but did not mention if he was on other meds...if he is, I would also investigate possible side effects of these. Best of luck...regardless of the final diagnosis, it's stressful for you! Lori , M.S. New and looking for answers Hi, I'm new here and am looking for some guidance. My husband hasn't been diagnosed or even seen regarding this matter as of yet. Here's some history...he's very young at least in terms of dementia, he's only 35. His grandfather had alzheimers. He is under a neurologist's care for what they term restless leg but I think is a small fiber neuropathy...he has burning in his feet/legs but no voluntary movements and moving them doesn't relieve any sensations. His toes used to move involuntarily and he used to twitch in his sleep but gabapentin is helping that. He was on Lyrica for a short time but he had horrible nightmares if killing himself so they switched him. He's had constipation problems from childhood but coffee and magnesium seem to keep him regular. They've diagnosed him with Irritable Bowel Syndrome....dairy seems to be a trigger. Here's my concern. When he was in his 20's he had two instances of hallucinations...he doesn't think they were hallucinations. He believes it was a real instance but that it was a spirit (not an actual living person). He could describe the man in detail and said the man shook his leg (it was at night but he was awake...hadn't gone to sleep yet....he found out afterwards that the person he described sounded like the previous owner before my husband was even born). The other instance was when he saw a bottle cap fly off the counter and noone else was around. Those were the two he's told me about from yrs ago. In the last year he's told me about a few more that happened now where he can describe the people. He's also always seen things for many years since his 20's....like a feeling someone there, seeing a motion out if the corner of his eye etc. He swears someone us there at work...the lights go off and on, etc. He truly believes in ghosts, spirits and paranormal activity. Anyway, in the last year he was sleeping and swears he woke up and saw an image of a little boy (mind u this was at my parents house where my father swears there's a boy ghost based on old articles). He also saw at our house a guy in a trench coat on the side if our house when mowing the lawn...again only happened once. He also saw a while ago a man in khakis and polo shirt hauling a** as my husband puts it through his bldg at work. He thought at first it was his dad (they own the business together) but realized it wasnt....I believe he may have initially tried to say something to him but not sure. When he realized it wasn't his dad he assumed it was another spirit. About a month or so ago he saw this person again (same exact thing) and then again just about a week or so ago. This was the first exp of an image recurring. A few months ago he saw a little boy at work (doesnt know if ssme boy from before as faces arent Always cleaTheseus says the boy (spirit to him) was messing with him like paranormal activity....things were moved and he was the only one there and knows he didn't move them. He said he thinks his grandfathers spirit is there cause the lights go off and when he says gramps turn the lights on they go back on....again hd believes paranormal activity. These episodes are sporadic and more often it's just a feeling of someone there or shadows or motions he sees out of the corner of his eye. I was getting concerned, especially of the one that rebutted 3 times and looked up hallucinations and found all info on LBD. He never hears voices and he said the " spirits " never try to contact/speak to him. I'm scared this is the start of the dementia. He does have some autonomic issues....constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, burning feet/legs that I think are misdiagnosed, sometimes his fingers/toes are cold and I don't know why (not all the time), his ears get really red after a shower, his feet would twitch when sleeping, his body shook really bad once and his hand another time last year while sleeping. He had a sleep study and all was fine but he had Lyrica in him at the time (and in his system for about a week) so that could have skewed it and his twitches/shaking weren't all the time. Dr said his brain MRI looked good last year and his EEG had very mild bursts of beta that he wasn't concerned about....they were testing him because of the burning and twitching at night. Does this sound like the very start of LBD, even at 35? Thank you in advance for your help.
Guest guest
(I'm not an MD or any sort of healthcare professional.) It's very unusual for LBD to begin with hallucinations. And I've never heard of anyone in their 30s being diagnosed with LBD. If your husband has dementia and behavioral problems AS WELL AS the hallucinations, then I think there would be slightly more reason to be concerned. But with hallucinations only and age 35, I think it's very unlikely your husband has LBD. There are other explanations for hallucinations. Has your husband discussed these with a neurologist or psychiatrist? > > Hi, > > I'm new here and am looking for some guidance. Guest guest
Thank you. My husband was on Lyrica and then switched to Gabapentin when he had the bad reaction to Lyrica. No other meds and he's only on the Gabapentin for burning pain. He hasn't mentioned these images he sees to a dr because he believes it's paranormal activity, they dont bother him/never communicate, and are gone in a flash if he blinks or looks away, and while he believes they are real things he sees he knows/believes they are dead spirits (maybe stuck here and haven't gone over yet). I wasn't concerned until the one became recurring (saw the same thing 3 times). Last night I brought him a cookie and he said he had what was like Deja vu....he knew I was going to do that, he saw it before like Deja vu. Made me scared he was getting confused. The night before we were on the couch and he started looking around....said he thought he saw a fly. I looked it up and found LBD....and figured with his IBS, burning feet, constipation etc that are autonomic issues. I saw hallucinations as being the first sign before any cognitive issues showing up. > > Hi, > > Honestly, this sounds more like a psychiatric disturbance to me. Guest guest
Hi - Firstly, I am so sad for what your going through and although I am not a psychiatrist so this is no way a medical diagnosis- I wanted to add that : I agree with the other members of our group that this sounds more like a psychiatric issue than LBD which in all likelihood can be kept under control with the right , like atypical anti-psychotics and other drugs ! I'm surprised noone has steered U to a good psychiatrist - the onset of as schizophrenia has an onset at approximately 30-35 yrs! Please keep us informed - I bet once u find a good psychiatrist and get the right Meds along with talk therapy your husband could be stabilized and live a good life especially since your catching it early on So- hang in there - and by all means find a good psychotherapist FOR YOURSELF! You need support too! Your husband is lucky to have such a thoughtful and a supportive spouse ! Sending strength to you from NYC ! Judy Judy R. Guest guest
I really appreciate everyones opinions. I dont believe he's showing any dementia or behavioral signs other than what I pointed out. Not really sure what they would be. He sometimes withdraws when we are with a group of people but that's just him I think. It isn't like he doesn't respond, he just gets quiet but he'll respond if u talk to him. He definitely gets irritable at times but I feel like he's always been that way (like a woman PMSing -lol). Maybe a little more so lately but he's also stressed at work. He used to have bouts of insomnia but the gabapentin helped that. He did have twitches/movement while sleeping (and two episodes of his body shaking while sleeping-almost like a convulsion) but the sleep study was normal (again he was on lyrica so that could be why or because it didn't happen every night) but again that had pretty much stopped with the gabapentin...only a few twitches/movements of his feet sometimes. Not sure if these are things u are referring to. He hasn't seen a dr regarding this or mentioned it to them because he doesn't feel it's an hallucination but paranormal activity and he knows they are dead....there's no communication. Just brief flashes of them and then they are gone when he turns his head or blinks. The info on the Internet...mayo clinic, webmd, studies, etc noted that hallucinations could be the first sign and not show any cognitive problems. > > > > Hi, > > > > I'm new here and am looking for some guidance. Guest guest
I also forgot to mention about a year ago he took what his brother told him was a prescribed sleeping or anxiety pill (another bout if insomnia). He had a bad reaction, said hid heart raced really bad, thought he was going to have a heart attack and then he got very very tired. I dont remember which one he said it was but when my husband looked it up it was for the other reason. I know I read about sensitivity to meds and wasn't sure if this fit as it was a sleeping or depression pill. > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > Honestly, this sounds more like a psychiatric disturbance to me. Guest guest
Sorry but I don't know about info on the Internet. I go by the diagnostic criteria. Guest guest
Now I'm really scared. Last night, we found a pair of my husbands socks in the recycling garbage can. He asked if I put them there but I didn't. He must've done it the night before when he took his socks off. I know I misplace things sometimes but with this incident, the hallucinations ( saw another yesterday and said he had a feeling it was my aunt he never met but we spoke about 2 weeks ago who is sick), he had drifters in his eye yesterday and the night before (whatever that is....says it's Luke a black dot, almost like a fly), the incident at work where he thought the boy he hallucinated was playing games on him and moving things (after last night I wonder if he did it and forgot), a few weeks back he did laundry and twice forgot to hit the button to start it after turning the knob. Yet he handles complex issues and manual labor tasks every day with no problem. > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > Honestly, this sounds more like a psychiatric disturbance to me. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
First, I want to tell you a couple of things about myself. I'm not a medical professional of any kind, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I am also someone who believes that there are spirits among us and take comfort from that. This actually helped when my mom started having hallucinations because I responded with my own belief that what Mom was seeing was real. I know it was very real to her. Asking her calm questions about what she was seeing seemed to make them less frightening to her. It sounds to me, though, like your husband is dealing with a number of issues. The frequent sightings (or hallucinations) sounds like a psychiatrist should definitely get involved. If not a psychiatrist, then a neuro-psychiatrist. (Dare I suggest a parapsychologist, as well?) Though I do believe there are spirits among us, I think the frequency is something to be concerned about. But it also sounds like your husband has a number of physical issues. I think you're right on the money when you suspect that the hands and feet have something to do with neuropathy. I have peripheral neuropathy and what you describe sounds very familiar. There might also be some spinal issues that should be looked at. My doctor explained to me that, when the pain, numbness, burning is on both sides, it is probably neuropathy. If it is on one side, there is probably a disc issue that a neurologist and/or neurosurgeon should check into. Also, though we all know that we should never use someone else's prescription, your husband's reaction to this one could be a matter for concern. You might want his doctor to run an ECG (aka EKG) either to check for heart issues or as a baseline for what might become a heart issue. He is not too young for something like that to show up and early detection can be critical. My aortic aneurysm was found when I was in my early 40s. I am now 58 and the aneurysm is well controlled. (My dad died at 48 of an aneurysm he didn't know about because he didn't get his concerns checked out.) I'm considerably older than your husband and having a number of separate health issues is normal at my age. But most of them were there when I was in my 30s and 40s - just not so noticeable. I think most of us want to bundle all of the health concerns we have into one treatable diagnosis. But that can be dangerous. Each issue should be reviewed separately. Try not to panic. I hope you have someone to talk with about this other than your husband. You also need a lot of calm reassurance and hugs. This is also important for your husband's well-being. He needs you to be as calm as possible when you are around him. Wait until you know that panic is needed before you panic. I'm willing to bet that all of this is treatable, whether it is dementia or something else. Guest guest
I forgot one thing that is slightly off topic but related. This is something I tell my nieces and nephews, who are only slightly younger than your husband. Check your husband's life insurance and your own. Get it to at least an adequate level to cover debts and expenses. Also get or check the level of your long term care insurance. Do this now, before you have a firm medical diagnosis for these, or any other, issues. Don't wait. Once you have a diagnosis of just about any physical issue outside of just the normal run of the mill stuff, getting life insurance or long term care insurance, or getting them to the right levels, becomes somewhere between difficult and impossible. This is really important. People often don't find out how important until it is too late. You are not too young to worry about this. The time to do it is when you are young and healthy. Guest guest
He wont see a psychiatrist. I can try mentioning it to his neurologist, thionyl. I wasn't concerned until the frequency started and that one that recurred 3 times.....plus putting the socks in the garbage and not realizing and thinking I did it. We were wondering if maybe the gabapentin is suddenly after 8 months adding to it....he is working a lot so not getting much sleep and stressed out. I do remember his MRI from 1 year ago was normal but his EEG showed mild bursts of beta (whatever that means)...the neurologist wasn't concerned. In his report, he put good cognitive skills...just from an initial first exam...but put slight word searching. Neither my husband or I understand this because he doesn't search for words...he answers questions or talks like a normal person. He sometimes takes a minute to think about a question before answering it but we all do that. Can't get long term care since he's already under a neurologist for the burning feet/legs. We tried and they said we had to wait 2 yrs to see if his symptoms progress. > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > > > Honestly, this sounds more like a psychiatric disturbance to me. Guest guest
This may sound pretty out there, but try assuming that what he sees is real (it is to him). Then suggest parapsychology. I honestly don't know who or what you will find as a resource for this, but it was a fairly widespread profession 20 years ago. Suggest that what he is seeing is too frequent to be totally normal and that seeing a parapsychologist might be a way of dealing with his sightings. Try also enlisting his primary doctor in the quest for LTC. Explain that you have been turned down unless he can get through that 2 years. Ask if there is a treatment or something else that can alleviate the issue so that he can eventually qualify for the insurance and then stay on top of it. My mother is on Medical Assistance and right now it is pretty good and a real blessing. But politics being what they are, I have a feeling that you won't be able to count on it for your lifetime. I think you need the help of the medical profession to get your husband to the point at which he can qualify - or their advice as to whether he will eventually qualify. And get your own. If you do end up being his caregiver, it takes a toll. You are likely to need your own care. Give these things a try. What have you got to lose? Guest guest
I appreciate the advice. I have tried speaking with him again but he doesn't see a reason to go to the doctor. The hallucinations don't bother him, he said they are gone with a blink of the eye, he knows the images while " real " to him are not actual living people but spirits. Nothing I can do to convince him otherwise. I can pray and hope that he's right and it isn't anything (he is on the gabapentin that makes him tired...or at the least helps him with his bouts of insomnia...and hasn't been sleeping much..getting up at 3:30am after going to bed around 10pm to go to work...working 16 hour days...so maybe it's an issue with not enough sleep especially with the medication and being stressed out about work.) Guess we'll see. It does concern me that over the last year there have been 3 completely different episodes that occurred months apart from each other and again while he was still on the gabapentin (and actually I think one or two of them took place while on Lyrica which he had a bad reaction to). The first one was him forgetting the word " rug " ...he just said you know that thing on the floor but he was on the Lyrica and was hardly sleeping at all because it gave him very bad nightmares so that could be from sleep deprivation. Hasn't happened again since and that was about 9 months ago. Then a few months later we were driving to my parents house and he stopped a few houses before their's thinking it was their house....I had to point out to him that it wasn't their house and he said he was just testing me and then when I pressed the issue he said he just wasn't paying attention, thinking of something else and was able to figure out the right house after that (was either on the Lyrica or the gabapentin and I don't remember if this was during a stressful period at work or not where he wasn't getting much sleep). Now, again months later, another different episode....we found a pair of socks in the garbage can...just laying there on top and he still has no recollection of doing that....could have been an honest mistake of throwing something else away and the socks went with it but it was laying right on top so I'm not sure about that.....again he's on the gabapentin still and hasn't been sleeping much because he's working a lot and stressed....but he's also seen more hallucinations too....again not sleeping alot on the medicine and almost all of them happen at work only (aside from one incident) and only one hallucination recurred. Now that he's gotten sleep he hasn't had any...then again he doesn't usually get them at home. I know some have said here that other issues have to show up with the hallucinations to be dementia and I understand that (my grandmother has dementia). But I also know it has to start somewhere and I'm not saying he has enough symptoms to be classified as clinical dementia of any kind....just wondering if this is the way it presented for anyone else or if I'm way off track? I know he's really young, only 35, but his grandfather did pass away from Alzheimer's (and his great aunt so it runs in the family). Since I can't get him to a doctor's office I was looking for advice to see if any of these are signs of the start of early dementia....I've read a lot but I'm not sure I understand what I've read. Thanks for all the help!!!! > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Honestly, this sounds more like a psychiatric disturbance to me. > > I > > > > would look into such things as schizophrenia, schizoid/schizotypal > > > > personality disorders, bipolar disorder, psychotic depression...things > > like > > > > that. Guest guest
One of the things you might watch for is his ability with numbers. I didn't put together that Mom was having trouble with her check book. And even more with her money.  One thing you might do is to remind him that it isn't about is he having a problem, but you can keep it from getting worse. The other thing to watch for is his balance. Falling is a big clue. His sleep pattern is another reason he needs to see a Doctor even if he doesn't have dementia. I am not convinced you are on the wrong track. Something is going on and if you can keep it from getting worse it is better.  You will want to use the Internet with the Doctor so you can talk about what you are worried about. The MD might be able to call him in for his yearly check. Does he have sibs who could convince him to make an appointment or his parents.? What about a yearly check. I would set up an appointment and ask if he forgot he asked you to make the appointment. That is what we call " loving lies " to help us get done what needs to be done. If something else is going on in his mind, you can't wait until he decides to go in. I had the same problem with Mom and I just made the appointment .  Hugs,  Donna R  [ LBDcaregivers ] New and looking for answers > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I'm new here and am looking for some guidance. Guest guest
He's very good with numbers and can calculate figures in his head...I haven't seen a problem with this but will keep an eye out. He also hasn't had any balance issues or falling that I've seen. His sleeping is of his own doing. He used to have bouts of insomnia but that was always when he was worrying about work. Now with the gabapentin even if he's worrying he still falls asleep. As for getting little sleep right now that's because he sets his alarm to get up at those hours so he can go into work very early...he owns his own business and works crazy hours to get everything done. He'll go into work at 3:30 in the morning and not get home from work until 6pm or later and does this several times a week!!!! It's not like he's waking up in the middle of the night because he can't sleep. See, he doesn't see it as keeping it from getting worse because he doesn't think there's anything there to keep from getting worse!! He thinks I'm crazy and just worrying for nothing...that I need to stay off the internet because you can diagnose yourself with so many diseases from it! I can't just make an appt for him and tell him he forgot he asked me...his memory isn't bad. Other than those few isolated instances, he's very aware. He's a normal 35 year old!! It would be like him trying to fool me....I'd definitely know. His family doesn't know and he's not going to tell them...nor I am because if nothing is wrong we will have a huge problem in our marriage if I went around him to speak with them. Plus, they'll think I'm nuts for thinking it to because they haven't seen any of this. Again, he's a completely normal 35 year old man aside from the few instances I spoke of. He did have a sleep study done last Feb and it came back fine!! I'm hoping its the medicine along with lack of sleep and stress but I'm beginning to think it's not because of all that I read on the internet....even though it' been only a very few instances along with a few hallucinations over the course of the last year I can't find anything else on the internet that it could be. Nothing else comes up in my searches. And like you said, you aren't convinced I'm on the wrong track and you've experienced seeing this disease. I just keep thinking of his age and hoping I'm wrong!! I'll just have to keep looking out for more problems...keep an eye out for the numbers and falling/balance issues. If it progresses, I'll try to use that and say it's no longer nothing to get him into the dr. Regardless, if it is lewy body dementia there's nothing they can do for him...even the medicine won't really by him much more time. From what I've read, Lewy Body seems to be pretty aggressive. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Honestly, this sounds more like a psychiatric disturbance to me. > > > I > > > > > would look into such things as schizophrenia, schizoid/ schizotypal > > > > > personality disorders, bipolar disorder, psychotic depression...things > > > like > > > > > that. Guest guest
I'm not a doctor - but my Dad does have Lewy Body Dementia. Dad sees things...when it started it was mostly children and animals. Dad is now in a nursing home and he now when he looks out the window - there's a wall about 50 feet away with a fence on top - he will see things like guys hunting or a lot of trees - sometimes people will " appear " in the room with him. He doesn't believe in ghosts so he's decided that there are a series of tunnels in the nursing home and these people will pop up and then disappear. The people never talk to him and he can't describe them in detail. Sometimes he sees my Mom and my sister there (and I think it's something called capgras) - He has stiffness - and only slight tremors - there's a lot of pain standing up and walking. One of the big indicators for me was that my Dad couldn't sequence anymore (he couldn't put his pills in his pill box - and he was really really struggling with math) these two things were completely out of charater for my father. And they were the trigger for me to really look into things....he didn't tell us about the halucinations right away because he thought he was loosing it. He wasn't - Lewy Body Dementia is all about plaque...LBD and parkinsons walk together and it's also my understanding that if altizheimers gets involved there are tangles in the brain as well. In other words none of these things are mutually exclusive. It is inherited and it is predomient in men - at least that is my understanding of it. I also believe my Grandfather had it but it went undiagnosed. I know your husband is only 35 but a lot of what is being described at least from you wrote sounds like Lewy Body - they can have auditory halucinations and well as ones that effect the sense of smell. Your husband maybe using the only explaination he has to justify what he's seeing. I'm also in a support group that has at least two people that are under the age of 50 who's husbands have it - one of them is a young woman with two children. I would definetly go to see a neurologist or a neuropscychologist and tell them that you think this is Lewy Body Dementia - tell them that with authority and then let the doctors do their job. They will figure it out...Always look for a phsical explaination for what's going on. Escpeically if there was any kind of dementia that ran in his family ..... In my experience usually there's usually a physical explaination for whatever is happening. Look for physical proof first and do extensive research. I think your off to a good start by looking into LBD first. I also got an e-mail from another member of your support group with the following information: DLBD was added to the list of compassionate benefits disorders by Social Security meaning no more 2 year wait time for medical benefits. In addition other Parkinsonisms (PSP, MSA and CBGD) were also approved. It's so scary when you realize there is something wrong. It's scarier still going to the doctor. I remember saying to my Dad. Dad I want you to go see this doctor because I think something is wrong...He said, " Girl you better be right! " I said Dad if I'm wrong you can kick my ass around the room and I will never never mention it again and I apologize in advance for everything if I'm wrong - I want to be wrong. He did go and he was relieved as we all were to find out what it was. Once you know what it is THEN you can go about figureing out what to do and how to cope. Find a good neurologist or a neuropsychologist in your area - preferably one that specializes in LBD and then go. In my opnion it's more painful not knowing what's going on than finding out what it really is.
