Good question!!

We had his DOC band removed after 8 wks of treatment. He was just

over 8 mo old when finished. The doctor told us we had 2 choices.

We could be done now with a bit of flattening still apparent or we

could get molded for another band. We felt we had seen a great

amount of change, so we felt happy with our result and finished

treatment. Fast forward to today....he is now a 6 1/2 yr old with a

big flat spot on the back of his head. Granted the correction we

saw fixed his ears and forehead, but he still has an obvious flat

spot on the back of his head. He wears very short hair (all 3 of my

boys do) and my family says you cannot see it, but if you FEEL it

then you can feel a slight indentation and you can feel where it is

flat. It is now on the back right upper part of his head since he

has grown (it used to be on the lower area). They had told us we

would probably have more correction as time went on (he was out of

banding at 8 mo for heavens sake). I didnt notice anymore

correction after banding. Considering he was now big enough to not

be laying on the back of his head I know he wasnt going to get any

flatter. Ugh. I am happy with our results, but now looking back I

may have gotten a second band after all. I dont think he will ever

care as his head is shaped nice and his eyes are in the right place,

etc. Its a mom thing. Beat myself up for not doing more even

though it shouldnt really ever matter later. Just know I really

doubt there will be much change after banding. Just my opinion.

Sorry to write a book!

Hi Stacey, my son never had the band but I did reposition him at

night (even though the ped said just leave it!).

It sounds like the flat spot won't be going away. That's

interesting that your son's flat spot moved! My son's flat spot is

in the back middle to upper area right now and he is aged two. So

perhaps it will move to the top later on. If he had normal hair I

think the pediatrician might have been right when he said hair will

cover it because it's not that bad - but guess what he has a cowlick

RIGHT there that just seems to accentuate it! The hair sticks up

and also goes across! I wonder if he will outgrow this? His hair

is cut so nice and short right now which looks great but I can

really see that spot! :(

Oh, man. Thats no good. I almost think girls could cover it up

better. My boys where their hair short (like daddy) and my son who

had the band and now the flat spot has hair with just a bit of bend

and it sticks to his head. So with short hair that sticks to his

head, you see the divet. UGH. I hope your sons cowlick moves.

What a stinky place to have that :(

Thanks !

What is " the divet " ? Is this a mark on his head that the helmet

made?

Yes, I think girls can definately cover better and also those with

curly hair - no problem! Perhaps I'll try and find out more about

cowlicks but maybe I'm going to deep! My husband thinks all is fine

(typical). He said his head was fine when he was a baby - I've

since shown him a photo (before we started repo) and he said it

looks like a big egg on the side of his head (the bulging), I

said " see, at the time you told me he looked fine " . He just

said " Oh " . Men!

The divet is his flat spot, but because his head is all nice and

round with the exception of this spot it almost looks more like a

divet or ditch than a flat spot. Oh, well, at least his ears are

even and his forehead looks great!

My dh is very involved but thought I was over reacting on this child

since we already had one yrs ago in a band. I kept pointing out her

bulging fore head and the flat spot. He said ya, but it will go

away if we get her out of her swing. Well, he went with me to the

neurosurgeon appt and the doctor pointed out the fact that her ears

are out of alignment and dh said " wow, guess it is bad " . Maybe our

husbands are just so accepting and us moms look at it like our job

to find issues and fix them??? My dh thinks my dd could float on

water, so of course he doesnt want to acknowledge a flat head :)
