I use the term " personal " here advisedly; I am as far as I know the only Desideratist on the planet. My whole religion is expressed in the Desiderata, and I don't see a need for more. Favorite line, and probably best known: " You are a child of the Universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the Universe is unfolding as it should. " As a child of the Universe, I am who I am because somebody has to be me right now, or it'd be a whole different Universe, now wouldn't it? I don't disapprove of the People of the Book. But no Desideratist has ever killed anybody to defend Desideratism, or forced anybody else to become a Desideratist. That seems like a Good Thing. But that's just me. -- <dbsmith at atbbs.dyndns.org> Pegasus Mail is free software, committed to the notion that communication is as basic a right as free speech, since free speech without a medium by which it may be heard is as loud as silence. -- , author, Pegasus Mail <http://www.pmail.com>

I consider myself a Pantheist also (like the writer I was commenting about), but like to say that I have a maverik spirituality. Here in the religious south, people don't like to hear that. > " You are a child of the Universe, no less than the trees and the stars; > you have a right to be here. There was a document that was something of a big deal in the '70s in the US, called the Desiderata. It was (apparently) either translated or written by Max Ehrmann in the 1920's. It has occasionally been described as " Found in Old North Church " and a couple of other places with various ages, but probably Max Ehrmann probably wrote it. It is hard to describe without quoting it, but it's a statement of fundamental spiritual principles, very simple. The word Desiderata is probably of Latin origins, but I dunno exactly. You can websearch easily for Desiderata and find a copy of the full text. I think it's worthwhile, but then I'm a Desideratan. Probably -the- Desideratan, for that matter. > > " You are a child of the Universe, no less than the trees and the stars; > > you have a right to be here. I would say that it was sufficient, for one to have a healthy attitude toward life. I have a copy that I made a few years ago myself, by looking it up on google, then transcribing it into a nice calligraphic font, then downloading it through my printer. I put it in a nice oak picture frame. It was a nice song, too. Clay
