Guest guest
Gene, the service I work for carries buretrols. Of course with the rarity of pediatric calls, they are seldom used. Guest guest
Hello it's me again. We carry buretrols on our units although they are not used a lot. I do not know if our medics do not like them or what there beliefs are. Our protocols call for pediatrics to receive fluids via a buretrol or 60 gtt admin set. The only thing is I do not know if we are ordering more when the stock is depleted. Mike Shown FF/EMT-P Canyon Lake Fire & EMS
Guest guest
The Cy-Fair VFD EMS Division carries them in each Pedi Kit on each ambulance. Expensive but well worth it in the long run. Most services cannot afford the expense, afterall, isn't this the reason we don't see a lot of new or useful equipment? Bottom line dollar? They are a busy Suburban agency with the tax base to support this. The advances and " thinking outside of the box " is a mainstay of their Medical Director and the fabulous personnel within the agency. --- wegandy@... > wrote: >In spite of the widely held belief that Buretrols, Volutrols, and the like >are recommended for use in drug administration to pediatric patients, I know >of no services that carry them as standard equipment. > >Comments? > > E. Guest guest
Hello, I used to be with AMR and they did carry buretrols as of last May. Not sure if they still do or not. silvermedicj

Guest guest
Gene: We carried them in California and a couple of the EMS services I worked for here in Texas did, too. That was a while back so I have no idea if anyone here carries them now. Just because they don't doesn't mean they shouldn't. I personally think they should because they are an excellent solution to a lot of EMS problems, to say nothing of being the best way to BE SURE you don't fluid overload a pedi. I daresay it is an economic decision, not a medical one. Just my stinkin' personal opinion. Guest guest
Buretrols would also come in handy if and when you get to procainamide. The dosage is a little tricky due to the 20-30 mg/min up to 17 mg/kg cut off. A buretrol mixture would be quite easy to figure and control. gg E. Guest guest
Graham EMS has carried the Buretrol set as standard equipment in our Pediatric Kit for the past 10 years. Graham EMS is a hospital based EMS in North Central Texas serving approximately 15,000 residents and visitors of Young County. Guest guest
Rural/Metro Ambulance - Bastrop County carries Buretrols on our ambulances. I have yet to need one, but if I didn't have one on the truck, I would need one! After all, that's how it ALWAYS works! ;-) Barry E. Guest guest
I pretty much use them any time I start an IV on a child under 8. Especially if I am transporting to a pediatric hospital. (No reason to provoke the wrath of a pediatrician!!!) I guess it probably is not necessary for every one of them that I have used but I would rather use them than risk overloading a pedi and making their life more difficult! Guest guest
We took ours off ~ 2 years ago. Our pedis only get saline locks. If they need a bolus they get it through a syringe. This removes any chance of accidental overloads. When we do transfers, those pedis have IV fluids on a pump. K. Wiseman, EMT-P Lieutenant, B Shift South on County EMS bwiseman@...
