Guest guest
I finally decided to share my voice. I have not posted before, but I have been a member of the group for at least 2 months. I have indecision issues. Anyway I wanted to say hello to everyone and ask if anyone has any advice for finding a good psychologist? I have had bad experiences with people in the field since I was 7 years old and was diagnosed suicidally depressed (that was the gist of it anyway, I do not recall the specific term they used). This is of course outrageous to say the least I had never considered suicide, and still have not done so. The professionals I was seeing then never really tried to figure me out, just tried to make me fit their theories. That is the experiences I am still having. How can I tell them what my problems are and what I expect from them without them immediately trying to prove me wrong? The only reason I have even considered going to a psychologist is that my boss and room mates tell me I need to.
Guest guest
You will probably have to educate your psychologist about autism, since it's a new entry in the most recent DSM. Prior to the new DSM a lot of us were diagnosed with schitzophrenia, various personality disorders, mental retardation, etc. So I suggest you find a therapist who is knowledgable about autism, and/or is willing to learn more. I am not sure how to go about educating some one who doesn't listen to me. Of course, I am not sure if they aren't actually listening or if it is just that I am very suspicious of anyone in the field because of my past experience. Guest guest
If they're not listening to you they're not doing their job. That's like a taxi driver not driving or a plumber not fixing the pipes. Sometimes they do better with reading material, however. I gave my shrink the wikipedia article on asperger's and next time we met he agreed I had it.
