Ian, just got casted for his doc band yesterday. Personally, I would feel more guilty had I not gone through with the band. I just can't live with the " what ifs " I would feel like a horrible mom if his head didn't round out on its own. I did feel guilty for the simple fact I didn't act sooner. My ped. said it would round out once he started sitting up etc, but you never know. Of course I am nervous about what the public is going to say, but I need to do what's best for Ian Did they use forceps or vacuum on ?? They say that can contribute to plagio as well. Have you noticed any facial assymetry, like when you hold her up to a mirror?? There are a lot of pics in the photo section of babies who were repositioned. Good Luck. Also, don't beat yourself up over this. We try to do what is best for our children to avoid SIDS and this is just one of the downfalls. Take Care. The younger you begin repositioning, the better the correction will be, same goes for banding. There are lots of repositioning tips in both our " FILES " section and in our " LINKS " section. IF you would band her, no, the band does not cause hair loss. My daughter had a ton of hair when she was banded, didn't lose any. I've maybe heard of a couple babies losing a touch of hair, but nothing serious by any means. Cranial Technologies does band infants as young as 3 mos.. You can see their webpage at www.cranialtech.com They provide the DOCband. Where are you located? Orthomerica last I heard bands early as 4 mos.. They provide the STARband. The younger you band, the better (not pushing you into banding by any means!!!). It's just because babies heads grow the fastest & most in the first 12 mos of their life, especially the first 6 mos of life. In the mean time, do please check out all our repositioning info in the group! And stop beating yourself up over this, it happens to so many babies these days. Our aggressive repo did deliver results for our daughter Remy. Our repo was 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It was absolutely exhausting and grueling. The only thing that really kept us going was that we took photos of the top and sides of her head every two weeks to document progress or regression. Remy was never on her back except to change her diaper once we started repo. We had a mini camera installed over the crib and play area that send a live feed to a picture-in-picture to our tv and computer monitor -- we made sure that she never rolled on her flat spot. My husband and I worked exactly opposite shifts, so we didn't use childcare, and therefore we had total control over Remy's environment and repo efforts. Remy is our only child, too. When we drove anywhere in the car, either me or my husband rode in the back seat to reposition her head. In addition, we distracted Remy to her left when in the high chair or stroller so that the flat area on her head never touched the seat back. Remy also took her nap in my opposite arm for three straight months! I just wanted to give you an idea of what " repositioning " meant for us. Repositioning does not work for every baby; you just give it your best effort under your own circumstances, and honestly assess when it is time to move on! As mentioned in an earlier post, it is essential to set a deadline for trying repo, and BEFORE you reach that deadline, start your pre-work for getting a band or helmet. It can take weeks, sometimes months to slog through all of the appts, refferals etc. to finally, physically get your baby into a band, and you won't want gap between ending repo and starting a helmet or band. Our deadline was 8 months (3 months of repo), but Remy had no common accompanying asymmetries such as a bossing forehead, facial asymmetry, or ear misalignment (we only had the flat spot in the back with which to contend.) You can check for these kinds of asymmetries by holding your baby in front of a mirror, and viewing your baby from the top view looking down or from the chin view lookin up. Also, take photos, probably weekly in a baby as young as yours, to see if you are getting results from repo. That way, you'll make results-based decisions on whether to continue repo or pursue a helmet/band. There is a good " Decision Tree " in the FILES section of the group that may help you in your upcoming decisions. Only speaking for myself, the guilt gets fuzzier and fades with time. I'm still not over the failure of our pediatrician to diagnose and put forth some treatment options for Remy's plagio; she dismissed us month after month, until I went online, found this group, and diagnosed it myself! Except for my husband, my family was in total denial and no help at all when we were dealing with plagio and aggressive repo. This group meant so much to me, and supported me throughout all of our aggressive repo. I hope we are able to help you as well! How severe do you think her flatness is? I started repoing at about 6 wks for my daughter who was born with her plagio. I had a terrible time with it and though she made some progress, her plagio was very severe and I was told at 3.5 mos that it would never correct without a helmet. Of course I don't wish this on you by any means, but if thats what it comes to it really isn't that bad. I thought the same thing as you though! Hannah did lose a little hair on her pressure point in the back, but that was only because she had some skin problems there for awhile. I'm the only one who would ever notice though! Otherwise it didn't rub off or anything. You can see pictures in the " Hannah B " folder in the photo and before and after section of her progress. She saw amazing progress for the first month when she was so young (4.5 mos), but then her progress slowed down some. She ended up needing two bands since her plagio was so severe. I wish you luck in the repoing. You may also want to look at sleep repositioners, though your daughter is already getting to the age where it will be hard to use. Good luck with everythign. Some of my family and even pediatrician also thought I was overreacting--until the neurosurgeon told us it was the worst he'd ever seen!
