To: LBDcaregivers Date: Monday, August 30, 2010, 11:36 AM  Hi Everyone, I have been with this group since 2006 when my mom Ginny was diagnosed with Lewy but I don't post very often. But right now I have some good news to share. In May of 2009 I applied for the veterans benefit called Aide & Attendence. It took me from May to Oct to complete and submit the paperwork. Last week I finally received the notice that she has been granted the full benefit amount which is 1056.00. It has been a long road with mom, she has lived with us for the past 3 years. And it has been a long paperwork road with the VA. My plan is to place her in a Board & Care home (I found a good match last summer)as I have come to the end of my rope taking care of her. This VA benefit will go a long way in helping to pay for her care. If anyone is interested in applying for the benefit I might be able to answer some questions for you. Here are the basics for now. The benefit is for veterans or their spouse but the veteran must have served during wartime. They cannot have more than 80,000.00 in the bank. They must be currently paying for care. You will need things like discharge papers, death certificates, marriage info, dates, asset/income info, medical records etc. There is usually some kind of senior advocacy office in your local area that helps get the paperwork started. They will open the claim and help you complete paperwork and then you wait to hear. The benefit can be used to place your LO or it can be used for in home care with a hired person or to pay yourself for their care in your home or theirs. If you have any questions I will try to answer them. The past three years with mom here has been trying. My stress level is high and my body is screaming at me. I was hoping to keep mom with us until she was much worse but she is so difficult to deal with. She has a lovely set up at our house but she hates us, there is never a positive or even civil word out of her. She just doesn't get what the situation is. As in she doesn't know she is sick and we are doing everything for her!! Anyway, since most of our LO are in the same generation who did serve in WW II this benefit is worth knowing about. It is a long road to get it but worth it if your finances are straining or you feel that they need more care in private pay facility. The quicker, more complete and accurate your papers are, the less time it takes. Thanks & Mom Ginny dx 2006
