(my thinking anyway) Dee-- Isn't it funny how you can go along in life and be busy doing something and a little thought just jumps into your head from NO WHERE!! LOL This is what happened with the progesterone cream. I had never thought to say anything about it before since I only use it a half the month and it's a cream so I sometimes forget that I am using it. Thank goodness it is natural though----bad enough natural causes problems. I was weeding out back (what else is new!) when it just popped into my head--- I was thinking---why is my estrogen not getting to where it needs to be. Then I was thinking " receptors " which for a long time I really didn't understand till you explained it one day a while ago. Then I thought--aha! I wonder if the progesterone is BLOCKING the estrogen???? When I first used the progesterone cream it was because I was having PMS symptoms 2 weeks after my period instead of 1 week before. Doc said--- " I have just the thing for that, just follow the instructions on the tube " . So, trusting him--I did. It was great at first. Kept me regular, mood swings were good (now I have Xanax for that). A couple years later I started to get night sweats if I didn't use it. There were a couple of times I stopped for a couple months. One was when we switched insurance and they wouldn't cover it anymore so I had to stop but then the doctor got it approved. During the " stop " time, my hair would come out, got night sweats, breasts got tender. 2 months using it again and I felt fine. Happened again this year when I didn' use it before seeing (he wanted me off ALL things before I saw him). SO I wonder if the night sweats and hair loss are really a " withdrawal " thing or maybe I have really messed myself up. I see the endocronologist tomorrow. He SUPPOSEDLY did hormones as well and will see. Now I wonder if there will be a false progesterone reading. I wasn't using it when I saw him (it was the first half of the month). The thing now is---do I want to have night sweats and hair loss and stop using it. I guess if I do--this would plead my case about estrogen. Another issue is that April of 00 I was given Loestrin BC Pills to regulate my periods which, even on the P cream were going haywire (15 days - 30 days apart or 2 periods one after the other). This was when the burning got bad and stayed. I used them for 1 month it it was horrible! I was slightly burning before I used them but after I was on FIRE and it never quit. This was the start of everything for me (combined with antibiotic use). If Loestrin has estrogen, why did it make me feel so bad? Was it the progesterone too? or the fact that they are synthetic hormones? Thanks Dee, you have helped me SOOOO much--- Lynn
Guest guest
I was just reading all the notes and came on to this one. Please excuse me for jumping in when I don't have a clue as to past histories, but I am on something that seems to have worked quite well for symptoms of menepause and it is GREENSPlus. This is a line of natural remedies and they have one for alot of things ie: anitoxident, and PMS and menepause as well. I was getting terrible nightsweats a couple of days before getting my period as well as tender breasts you know all the good stuff and I started taking this stuff PMS and it really worked well. Sorry for interrupting but though I would just throw this out there. Good luck...from the new kid Lori RE: Progesterone cream question/ Dee > > Gosh I NEVER knew you were using a Progesterone cream... and for 3 or 4 years you have right? > > I had no idea. Guest guest
Lynn, This is Marilyn again. After I got to thinking about my use of the Norplant (it has been about 6 years ago) I had to tell you as best I can remember I was basically haveing a light period every couple of weeks. Just like you describe (except I don't know if yours is heavy or light). Anyway this stopped as soon as I had the Norplant (progestin) out. I went back to birth control pills. Unfortunately I did not use the ones recommended by Dr. Vliet so I guess they were pretty high in Progestin too. Anyway gradually over a couple of years my period just got lighter and lighter. The last year I was on the pill I didn't have a period at all. Of course my doctor said this was no big deal and that it just happened sometimes when you are on the pill. I never really believed it was no big deal. RE: Progesterone cream question/ Dee > > Gosh I NEVER knew you were using a Progesterone cream... and for 3 or 4 years you have right? > > I had no idea. Guest guest
Lynn, I had to run off to a hair appointment but I needed to pass a couple of other ideas past you. Please excuse my saying what happened to me and assuming it applies to you, but some of the things I am strongly suspecting in my case may give you some ideas. Loestrin was one of the bc pills I took. Dr. Vliet mentions it as one of the ones too high in progestin. About mood swings. Since I could not seem to tolerate antidepressants (except amitryptiline) I took Depakote (a mood stabilizer) for a year. I took this because I was anxious and tearful way to often. This wasn't the case when I was younger (before I started messing with my hormones with birth control pills and such). Anyway, since I have been off the birth control pills I have felt a sense of well being I haven't felt in years. In one of my early posts I suggested maybe this was due to the guafenisen I am taking. I wasn't sure about this, but since it was all I was taking I thought maybe this was it. Now I think it is due to stopping the birth control pills. Dr. Vliet says progestin is a depressant. Estrogen lifts mood. Even though my estrogen is still low I think the improvement in my mood is due to stopping the progestin (in bc pills). I am very hopeful that raising my estrogen levels will make things even better. Maybe I will even regain my sense of fun. One more note about the Depakote. I didn't think it helped particularly so I quit taking it. Anyway Dr. Vliet says that Depakote can trigger polycystic ovarian disease. Since PCOD is characterized by low estrogen and high testosterone, this probably is another thing that depressed my estrogen levels. Oh great. As far as high testosterone, I did gain weight in my face and trunk while on the depokote. My libido did not improve but with low estrogen this makes sense. Anyway just more ramblings from my mind stream. Marilyn A. Guest guest
Lynn, It's me again. I promise to shut up soon. Anyway I found some info in Screaming to be Heard that you might find helpful. " Current studies have shown that even over-the-counter progesterone creams can give very high blood levels that persist for a number of weeks after stopping use of the cream. I have treated numerous patients who had exaggerated PMS, depressive symptoms, worsening diabetes and allergies, increase in yeast infections, worsening fatigue, and loss of libido from high doses of progesterone. Stopping progesterone abruptly causes a withdrawal syndrome just like stopping Valium, Xanax or alcohol abruptly, because the same brain receptors and pathways are involved. .... If you have been on higher doses of progesterone for PMS, remember that you need a slow tapering to avoid having withdrawal symptoms. " Marilyn A. Guest guest
Lori, This Geen Plus stuff may be progesterone too. See if you can find out. Dr. Vliet lists some Progesterone creams and one is called Green Pastures. It is made by the Green Pastures Company also. It is one of the ones with really high Progesterone content. Since I recognise some of these names as stuff I have seen in the drug store and wondered about I am going to list them here. Body Creams with more than 400 MG Progesterone per once of cream: Angel Care Balance Bio Balance Cumulus Cerma Gest EssPro7 Fair Lady Femarone 17 Fem Creme Fem Gest Green Pastures Maxine's Feminique Natra Gest OstaDerm Pro-Alo Procreme Procreme Plus ProDerma Pro-Gest Progesta-Care Progonol SupraGest Today's Man Wild Yam Creme (by Wise Woman Essentials) Woman Wise Yamcon (Pro) Estra Body Creams with 2-15 mg progesterone per once of cream: Endocreme Femarone Life Changes Menopause Form Nutri-Gest PhytoGest PMS Formula Pro-Dermex Wild Yam Ext Yamcon Regular Creams with less than 2 mg progesterone per once of cream: Progerone Progestone-HP Wild Yam Cream (by Alvin Last, Inc.) " For comparison, a dose of FDA-approved, standardized perscription progesterone vaginal cream, Crinone 4 %, delivers 40 mg per application, and the recommended amount is one applicator every other night for six doses per month. Using Crinone 4% cream would deliver an average of 20 mg a day over 12 days. This is the amount that research to date has shown is sufficient for preventing endometrial hyperplasia. Depending on the amount used, many of the over-the-counter creams accounts for such side effects as weight gain, bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, low libido, acne, sweet cravings, depressed mood, lack of evergy, fatigue, back aches, and other effects of high levels of progesterone. " As usual this is from Screaming to be Heard by Dr. Vliet (ISBN 0-87131-914-4) Marilyn A.
