Its really nice to meet you. I myself am a huge fan of PECS. The

county where I lived in CA at the time, provided me a 2 day course in

PECS.. and from there, we introduced it to Tommy in and out of

school. Its worked tremendous! How is doing with it? I think

Tommy was around 3-4 (somewhere between there) when he started it.

Hello.

I joined this list quite some time ago, but I don't believe I ever posted

info about myself.

I am Kathleen, age 43, in Missouri, USA. I was diagnosed with Asperger

syndrome 9 years ago. Also, I am disabled by a chronic illness.

I have two children. I have been married for 20 years, and my husband left

me last year. Actually, I am surprised that he stayed with me that

long. He always wanted me to be different from how I actually am.

My participation in online forums is rather intermittent. I don't know

why. I wish it was different. So.. I will probably alternate between

lurking and posting.

A twenty-year habit is hard to stop. I stopped a

37-year habit.

I feel for you.

What helped me the most was when I stopped

thinking of myself as his wife. Every time my

husband frustrated me or each time the divorce

proceeding snagged, it improved when I corrected

my thinking to not being his wife.

When a period in a life comes to an end -

schooling, a job, living in a particular place, a

marriage - it can help to treat it as a death and

mourn its loss. Then continue without it.

Actually, a death would have been easier in some ways. It is a very

difficult thought that he *intentionally* left me. It makes for some

pretty serious self-esteem issues (i.e., if I wasn't " defective, " then

maybe this wouldn't have happened, etc.).

Almost everything you wrote describes me. Um, I think your shrink

would be quick enough to diagnose you with something if he wanted to!

Maybe he's mad that you came up with it first!

I typed in part of what you wrote below because I am learning the same

thing. I first started reading about Asperger's on June 6 so it has

been a little over a month for me. I feel pretty comfortable with my

self-diagnosis and I've asked people in this group to give me their

opinion.

Just so you will know a bit about me, since I have not posted for I

think a week... I am 47 years old, have a hard time making or keeping

friends, get " obsessed " about projects, which leaves me even LESS time

for friendships... I have to STUDY people to figure out what they want

and also what I should (maybe) do in a situation. It certainly does

not come naturally to me. I have partial face-blindness, suck at math,

am very artistic, apparently am a dog magnet as people's dogs keep

coming to our house and not going home I can excel at *individual*

sports but suck at teams and was always picked last until I quit

bothering to try to be picked. I can't walk across my kitchen without

bumping into stuff but I can play music (can't turn pages though so I

have to make copies of anything with more than one page!) I think in

pictures/video/audio/sometimes with typewritten words appearing and

disappearing on the " screen. " I do think a bit in words like " normal "

people do but there are always visuals, and the " normal " people I've

intereviewed so far do not think in any pictures at all. How weird!

Since I joined this group, and since I have started reading some of

the sites written by actual autistic and Asperger's people, I have

started to feel OK about myself for ONCE in my life. All the therapy

in the world has not helped me like this group and some other groups I

have recently joined.

I hope you can stay and learn some more about this and learn about

yourself.

P.S. At one time one of my employers joked about me having " 5 careers

at once. " I worked for him plus had about 4 things going on the side.

You probably aren't self-centered. I used to hear that all the time

from family and friends. Notice that if people call you self-centered,

they are also thinking about *them*selves and *their* needs. Every

single person who has told me I am self-centered is ALSO self-centered

in their own way.

Those pics, Dave, look quite like the pics I took of a house before

I began to fix it. The tub looks like it will clean up and be

really lovely!

That paneling reminds me of the paneling that I decided to replace

with drywall. It was a good thing, because there was no insulation

under the paneling!

and i just cleaned it up so there isn't all that wood to walk on.

quite muddy. i'm currently reading up on whether i can fix the

foundation myself or not. doing it myself will save me thousands, and

then i'll have no problem making minor adjustments if needed. i

currently shouild instead be reading up on probability and statistics

because i have a test wednesday and i'm very behind. i've always been

very very good at math, but this stuff seems a bit too abstract for me.

Statistics has always seemed like a tough discipline for me too. Then

again, a lot of it is all in how it's taught. There's not a whole lot one

can do to visualize probability and statistics, but once one finds the

visuals, they're in there but good.

Calculus is much easier, and so are elementary/intermediate/partial

diffEq...

yeah, i swept it and it's pretty much just dirt. some sort of cleaner

should hopefully make it look good. at some point we might want to put

in a bigger one (there's about another foot of space which could be

used), so we won't replace it until then.

we're ripping out everything in those two floorless rooms. it looks like

there was insulation, but the stuff is all decomposed. the paneling is

on top of some other wall. at first i wanted to save it, but i have now

noticed that it's very cheap paneling. we've cleaned up the kitchen and

have painted the walls a light yellow. the woodwork will be a light

green. i just had some kilz primer colored because i just want to cover

up the yuck and seal the peeling. i'll remodel the entire kitchen after

the rest of the house is livable and the windows are rebuilt, as it's

decent and i don't want to run out of cash or time before my lease is up

in may.
